Si-Carbide Shelves, Kiln Wash?

Howdy folks!

I came into some silicon carbide shelves, but they don't have kiln wash on them.  Would they be treated the same way as cordierite?

Ya, a couple thin coats of kiln wash on the pot side to start. I do a thin coat on the edges and underside so wood ash won't stick so much. I'm mostly catching the high spots on the shelf surface. Ash won't rise up and adhere to the insides of the small pores in the shelf surface. On the top side these pores need to be filled in so two thin coats is needed. I think I'll switch to using a small paint roller instead of the large Japanese brush. Both work pretty good but regular paint brushes with stiff bristles don't hold enough wash for long enough. Spritzing the shelf damp helps the wash stay fluid while you spread.

We use 50/50 EPK and Silica on ours.  Are they the 1" think ones or are they thinner?

We have the 5/8" or so thick ones from China, they are not advancers which are quite smooth. Ours have held up well with the kiln wash on them (we use the same kiln wash on our high Alumina shelves).
