....a real bonus year music wise!

Following recommendations in the 150 albums to hear before you die edition of CR I got Stand by Sly and the Family Stone, Mahavishnu Orchestra's Inner Mounting Flame and Allman Bros Live at Fillmore East. On top of that I received:

Bachman-Turner Overdrive - Not Fragile (added to my Xmas list following Woody's recommendation)
Black Crowes - Warpaint
Chickenfoot - Chickenfoot
Miles Davis - Birth Of The Cool
Muse - The Resistance

The Secret Santa CD looks good too with lots of bands I've never heard of. I have my suspects but will save my views until a full listen and the reviews kick off. The best of the noughties CD looks a cracker as well with lots of good songs.

The Christmas money Amazon order is alreday in too:

Bigelf - Cheat The Gallows
Crippled Black Phoenix - 200 Tons Of Bad Luck
Motley Crue - Dr Feelgood (just finished The Dirt and so fancied this)
Rammstein - Reise Reise and Leib Ist Fur Alle Da
Manowar - Battle Hymns (always wondered where to start with them so the recent CR buyers guide was very helpful)

If that all wasn't enough I got an £10 HMV voucher which I'm toying with using to buy Them Crooked Vultures. However, whilst I like Zep and the Foos I am not big on QOTSA so thought I'd check with the wise on here to see if it is something worth getting - what do you think guys and gals?

I'm with Kat. While it's closest to QOTSA it doesn't really sound like them and it is a great album.

Me too....it's an excellent album Rob, one of my top 10 for the year.

TCV was on my Xmas list to Santa, but he seemed to ignore it so I'm on
to Amazon.

I saw them at Leeds as they were the "secret slot" - absolutely superb
they were.

As listed elsewhere, I was very lucky to receive 3 Secret Santa CD's,
my car is flatly refusung to play any CD's at the moment (I think its
condensation related, my car is a Ford, anyone else have these
problems ?) so listening to them is proving difficult, my computer is
having a fair crack but No;1 son tends to monopolise this ! From
what I have heard they are great albums.

The only CD I got for Christmas was Metallica's "Kill Em All" which I
only have on LP and wanted on CD.

The previously mentioned GnR album arrived this morning.

Two more albums are on their way, will keep you posted.

Happy new year :)

Well I took a punt on Them Crooked Vultures and am quite pleased after a first listen. Some strong tunes on there and not too QOTSA for me (I only have Songs For The Deaf by QOTSA which never really did it for me but I will be digging it out for another go). I love the bluesy vibe on TCV and the spacious almost analogue sound it has. I'm a big fan of live-in-the-studio recordings and this one quite often sounds like just that, even if it wasn't. IMHO the quality does tail off towards the back end of the album but picks up again for the final couple of tracks.

Good recommendations guys, thanks.
Rob

PS - just got the new CR and the re-issues review of Montrose says it is the first time the album has been out on CD. Well, I have it on CD following an ebay auction earlier in the year and, as it is a genuine CD rather than a copy, I can only guess that the reviewer is wrong.

I have it on CD as well Rob.

And me, had it in my collection for many years. If it's been remastered I
might just invest in it as the older CD's don't have as much oomph

Well, Happy New Year to you all, hope everyone has had a good holiday
and today's hangovers aren't too bad!

I received quite a few albums for Xmas, mainly metal ones, including
Operation: Mindcrime so I'll soon find out whether I side with Woody
or Muttley on that album :P

Also big thanks to my Secret Santa, as I received 2 discs - a 'Best of
2009' and "Oh Matron!", a disc with a medical theme to all the artists/
songs.
I've not had a chance to listen to these yet, but the identity of my
santa would have been obvious from the very first song choice on the
Best of 2009 (Gov't Mule) even if the packaging and style of artwork
hadn't matched the Best of the Decade CD :)

Greg, please dont write your impressions until you have heard it about
20 times, (I didnt llike it a first !)

Having now heard it a zillion times I still rate it as one of my top
three albums of all time.

Woody,

I'm now on my 4th of 5th listen to it and...I think it's pretty damn
good.
It's also interesting to be hearing it at this point in time, as there
are lots of bands I've listened to who have clearly been influenced by
the sound on this record without me ever knowing it.
I have (I think) 'Empire' on vinyl, although my record player is
currently packed away due to lack of space...any recommendations on
which albums to go for next?
