Hi all,

Hope all is well with you.

NLT some recent summer buys:

White Lion - Big Game and Mane Attraction
ZZ Top - Tres Hombres
AC/DC - Powerage
Motorhead - Essential Noize (a best of from their first 4/5 albums)
Glen Hughes - Soul Mover

Plus some Dylan, Rod Stewart, black album era-Metallica, The Police, Orange Goblin (a slow grower) and a playlist of all the somgs I have from the 100 best songs list in the new issue (which is possibly why lists are so poular these days - we get to make playlists based on them for our mp3 players).

Also checked out the new song from Metallica on their myspace page.  Good stuff.  Looking forward to seeing them on BBC3 tonight live from Reading (shame Slipknot pulled out) and really excited about the new album on 12 Sept - will be getting my pre-order in soon.

Hello boys and girls,

I havent posted for a while as i've been busy with the move to London
and the new job but i'm glad to say things have turned out really
well. I love living in London and have got my eye on a few gigs
already Scorpions and Motorhead/Saxon both at Hammersmith, Thunder at
the Astoria, Quo at Wembley Arena etc... Whether I can afford to go to
them all is a different matter though ! Since I have moved I have only
bought and listened to 2 albums :

Mötley Crüe - Saints of Los Angeles
This is a good return to form by the Crue. The production on this
record has divided a few fans but I think it sounds fresh and captures
the energy of the band and while it's not in the same league as Shout
At The Devil or Dr Feelgood it's a lot better than thier recent
efforts Generation Swine and New Tattoo. Tracks that stand out for me
are Face Down In The Dirt, Saints of Los Angeles, and my personal
favourite Mutherfucker Of The Year.

Scorpions - Humanity - Hour 1
Bought off Play.com for £4.99. People who say the Scorps have not a
decent record for years should reserve judgement until they listen to
this album. Produced by Desmond Child who has produced albums by the
likes of Meat Loaf, Bon Jovi, Aerosmith, which as you can imagine give
the album a more polished and commercial sound however there are some
great moments on here such as the title track track Hour 1, 321, and
The Cross. There are 1 or 2 chessy ballads on here Love Will Keep Us
Alive, and Your Last Song spring to mind but overall a enjoyable
album. Worth a fiver at least.

Scorpions - Humanity - Hour 1 is an absolute bargain at £ 4.99, its a
great album.

NLT: The Works - Trespass, in places this is just great driving music,
I had both my twin boys (13) rockin away yesterday to the track
"Eight Till Five". Bringing them up the right way :)

UFO-The Monkey Puzzle
A good album with a modern feel but not UFO, it lacks the smooth sound
and guitar work of their past works.

Uriah Heep-Wake The Sleeper
A great return to form, sounds like Heep should, a must have album if
you like their early to mid eighties stuff. I really like this.

Saxon-Unleash The Beast, surprising for me but this is rather
good, great production and playing. Woody I am trying to get into Biff
and co, not too shaby at all is this.

Good effort Fred. I hope you recognise "Circle Of Light" from your
secret santa CD of 2005 vintage ?

You are absolutely right about the UFO album as well. I have the Uriah
Heep album on the way as well after it was highly recommended by
Ebbster (occassional contributer on here).

My Apocalypse - Metallica

the final track on the soon to be released Death Magnetic...although
I've become fairly cynical about Metallica and their latter day
output, I've got to admit that this sounds pretty good.
If the rest of the album is similar, then The Four Horsemen might
really be back to thrashing

What a brilliant track this is, if I had heard this before we
nominated our best rock tracks for Sian, I would have included this
track.
The album is superb as well.

I am out of sync and well behind on my reading of the magazine. In a
bid to catch up I have done a lot of reading this week.
Some weeks back I think we were commenting on our impulse or purchases
of poor choice albums and I claimed A Third of a Lifetime by Three Man
Army as mine. Well what would I know, in the April issue (I did say I
was behind) Hugh Fielder gives the very same album 7/10.I will have to
go and re-visit said album. It’s a small world.

It will not stand a chance against the Skew Siskin album9/10. A lost
treasure if ever there was one.

Amongst other things I was listening to Radio Suffolk today, whilst
out in my car busy getting to shops just after they closed !

Anyway, they had a program which was a mixture of football generally
and music from a certain year, one of which was 1976.

They played ELO and Boston both of which were great then they played
Staus Quo's Mystery Song, a track I have not heard for ages, certainly
this loud anyway. Well what a brilliant track this is. It was so
clear, so loud and so brilliant, might just have to put it on again at
home.

Superb, Woodster is a happy little bunny :)

Hi all. I’m finally back from various holidays (you really don’t
realize how steep the North Yorkshire Moors are until you try them on
a bike) and getting over the depression of passing 40.

NLT:

Two great packages from Epic/Legacy. There’s a variety of artists and
you get 5 albums cardboard sleeves in a slip case. I got the Cheap
Trick one (Cheap Trick, In Color, Heaven Tonight, All Shook Up and
Next Position Please) and the Ted Nugent one (Ted Nugent, Free For
All, Cat Scratch Fever, Weekend Warriors and Scream Dream). I
actually got them as presents but I happen to know that they’re an
absolute bargain at £14 each. The Blue Oyster Cult pack is a cracker
– Blue Oyster Cult, Tyranny & Mutation, Secret Treaties (endorsed by
me as the best album in the world ever), Agents of Fortune (the one
with that song on) and Mirrors – sadly I had them all already.

Diamond Head – Borrowed Time. I got a voucher from an old school
friend for my birthday and I decided to get something that reminded me
of those carefree days. I can still remember listening to this and
waiting for his ZX Spectrum to load. The voucher helped me get over
the highway robbery £15 they were charging. Still a top notch album
though.

Black Stone Cherry – Folklore and Superstition. Another good album
from this lot and I’m looking forward to seeing them in December –
hope they have a new soundman in tow. Two albums in and not a hint of
an original idea, but none the worse for that really, still great
entertainment. No terrible cover version this time round either which
is a bonus.

Metallica – Death Magnetic. I’ve ahem acquired a v. good quality copy
of this and it does sound very good at first listen – a real return to
form. Not entirely back to the greatness of Master of Puppets but
much much better than recent output. Some old style soloing and a
proper drum sound. I think Rick Rubin has done the business.

Classic albums are always great, no matter how many times you re-visit
them they are always good.
But what about the sh&^% we dismiss after one listen or just can't get
into it. After the review in Classic Rock of the Three Man Army album
A Third of a Lifetime in which I have, but assumed was crap. Well I
dug out the old vinyl and gave it some spins. Wow it is really quite
good, dated, but a lot more subtle than I remember with some great
tunes but as the reviewer stated not very memorable. I may have to get
a new copy of this. Also listened to another Saxon album, a band I
could never live with. Well Dogs of War is another surprise (Woody's
insistent battering has worn me down).
They will never be in my top whatever and I am still not keen on their
early output but this is a great metal album. Quite looking forward to
seeing them with Motorhead after all.

A friend has got me listening to some old Marseille albums, anybody
remember them or even like them. Time to go visit some old stuff that
I dismissed long ago. Try it folks.

Metallica - Death Magnetic
Came through post this morning. I've listened to the album and I have
to agree with everybody that it is a very good album and a return to
form for Metallica. Rick Rubin does a really good job on the
production and Robert Trujillo's playing on this album is pretty
impressive too. No horrible tinny drums and it's good to hear solos
from Kirk Hammett, something which was badly missing on St Anger. The
best way to describe this album would be a cross between And Justice
For All... and the Black Album There are no fillers on here and if
they played the entire album on monday night then I would be happy
with that, such is the quality of Death Magnetic. Metallica are back !

NLT (yes, you guessed it) Death Magnetic.

100% agree with Jamie's assessment.

This is a truly awsome record, way better than it deserves to be given their 'recent' form (and that from someone who doesn't think St Anger is THAT bad).

The boys are most certainly back in town!

To be fair I have only listened to it once all the way through, but
Kat, I have to agree with your hubby at the moment. I will give it
many more listens over the next few days and update my opinion as
needed.

My favourite to date is the single "the day that never comes"

also - If you have the digipack edition, beware of the sticker on the
front - I now have an annoying fingerprint on the back of it that I
can't get rid of. (just to assure you that I am anal about my cd's
and their storage!)

I have recently been listening to:

Quireboys - A Bit Of What You Fancy + Tramps and Thieves
Got both albums in a deal on Amazon - 2cds in one package with a whole pile of bonus tracks (which I normally find are weak additions but the demos provided here are almost better then the produced studio versions).  The former album I listened to over and over as a teenage when it came out.  The latter (their 2nd album) I'd never heard before - it is a grower but suffers from the fact that I know their first record inside out.  Amazing how you can remember lyrics you haven't heard for about 15 years.

Status Quo - 12 Gold Bars
Picked this up at Grantham Market last Saturday,  It is just what I've been looking for - a compilation of classic 70's Quo without the more patchy later material.  Marvellous.

Metallica - Death Magnetic (of course!)
Loving this more and more with each play.  Have to say that I do notice the clipping and poor mastering, especially on my mp3 player but the quality of the material far outwieghs that niggle.  All Nightmare Long is a current favourite song.

Sugar - Copper Blue
Another one from my yoof.  Great melodies and some top songs.

Rob - Enjoyed your post. That 12 Gold Bars album, is well worth having
in your collection, there is another one thats quite good as well,
not, 12 Gold Bars 2 but, "A Few Bars More", I think. I picked that up
for a few quid somewhere many years ago and play it more than 12GB's.

Following our e mails, I am very interested to hear your views on
Powerage.

NNLT (Now Not Listening To) - The lastest CR mag freebie which I do
not enjoy at all.
As I have yet to brave the previous one as I have prejudged it based
on the Progressive nature of it, thats two on the trot that have not
appealed.

I liked Powerage a lot.  I do't think it's my favourite of the Bon Scott stuff (that'd be the one whose name I can't recall right now but kciks off with Go Down) but it is definately a close number two.  My kids are becoming bid AC/DC fans now 'cause it gets played so much in Chez Jackson which is good news.

Rob,
That would be Let There Be Rock. I love Powerage. It's often
overlooked by fans and critics when disscusing the best AC/DC albums
who seem to choose Highway To Hell, Back In Black etc.. Another
underrated AC/DC album is Flick Of The Switch.

Two faced woman with your two faced lies.

Powerage is my favourite AC/DC album most of the time, just slightly
ahead of Let There Be Rock. To me it's just a little harder and the
lyrics are better, but then on other days my opinion is different.....
So there you have it. It's pointless in my book to try to separate two
pieces of absolute genius simply because I can't.
RE the free cd it seems that of late I seem to be Woody's echo, I have
the same opinion. The tracks just don’t blend well with too many
styles all mixed together and I was not keen on the prog... Still it
is free. I have also been getting into more Saxon with the live Rock N
Roll Gypsies, very good it is too.
Talking of very good- Monday night at the Manchester MEN Arena
Nickleback gave what I can only describe as a stunning show, a tad
short on guitar solo's but an absolute blast of high energy rock. I
will probably miss the Y&T gig in Liverpool because of the Nickleback
show but it was worth every penny.
NLTALO (just to add to the confusion- now listening to a lot of) Uriah
Heep and Krokus. Just purchased the CD of Heep Live 1973, as I got fed
up with turning the vinyl over. £4.99 on Amazon is a good deal with
me, Great live album, up there with?????????
Come on folks list your top 10 live albums again, especially the new

Fred: You and me are peas out of the same pod.
I was only playing my cassette of Heap Live at the weekend ! (Maybe
£ 4.99 might suit me as well).

Whilst Powerage is my favourite AC/DC album I totaly agree with your
comments.

Krokus: Excellent, well the early albums anyway: Metal Rondezvous,
Hardware, One Vice At A Time and Headhunter are all superb albums in
my view.

Live albums: I am going to be a bit predictable, you know: If You Want
Blood, Strangers In The Night, Live & Dangerous, The Eagle Has
Landed, World Wide Live, Highway Song, Slade Alive, that kind of thing
but maybe, as a suprise for you, how about Vardis with their classic:

Look, I know that I keep bleating on about it, and for anyone who will

you listen to it.

I encourage you to suss it out it's just great. There are several
tracks that are really brilliant. It took me a few spins to sort out
the tracks in my head, but the more I listen the more it improves.
It is their debut album and track 5 is called "Out Of This World" this
track lasts for nearly 13 minutes and is just brilliant. Track 3 is
also very good. The whole album is very very good, maybe the first
track is the weakest ?.
It sort of crosses over between NWoBHM and a more classic style. The
vocals are a bit high pitched but I soon got used to them and now I
really like the vocalist.

For me this is the best recomended album from this site forum yet.
(And I have never seen them anywhere before, not that I remember
anyway, even in Classic Rock mag).

Take a chance on Fred, you know it makes sense.

By the way I don’t give a s%$£ what my wife has to say about it as we

I am glad that Woody liked the album so much; it blew me away when I
heard it and it appears to have done the same again for Woody. If I
remember rightly I think there was a small review of the album in
Classic Rock Magazine about a year ago. I too enjoy the
recommendations from the members and because of them I often listen to
stuff that passed me by or I plainly dismissed myself for no good
reason. (E.g. Y&T, House of Lords, Joe Lynn Turner, Saxon? Halen with
Hagar etc)
Without licking anybody's arse, even my own, do take a chance on this

mind high pitch vocals it will knock your socks of.

Looking forward to the following arriving from Amazon next week:

Faith Hope Love - Kings X
Not heard this for years and years.  Used to like them back in the day and a mate of mine in Oz is a huge fan so I thought I ought to get back into their stuff.  A steal at less than £3 as well!

Best Of... - Georgia Sattelites
Had one lp of theirs as a kid.  Loved it.  Love Dan Baird's "Love Songs For the Hearing Impaired" album as well - have it on tape but can't get it on CD for less than a small fortune.  Looking forward to some straight ahead rock n'roll when this arrives.

In The Court Of The Crimson King - King Crimson
Thought about it before but never taken the plunge.  Been listening to a lot of 70's prog recently (Close to the Edge, Lamb Lies Down etc.) so thought I'd go for it when the album was featured in the latest issue under every home should have one.
