So off us three old rockers went, me, my brother and Mr Diva (DTH you
you), as usual it took the real fight between getting of our arses and
going out for a late night when pipe and slippers were beckoning.
Been to the pub the night before and probably needed an early night
however we battled on......
.
Went into the Twist in Colchester, now I have not been in here for
many years, whilst it is still a dark dingy old place it was slightly
less dark and dingy than it used to be.
.
Just in time for the support band which is good for us as we normally
manage to miss the support bands. Shotgun Affair they were called. I
tell you what, they were great. I like these late night rock outs
me :)
They really were good, I was very happy to watch these guys and I wish
this up and comming band all the success they can muster. Check em out
guys and gals. Good classic rock played by young and enthusiastic
rockers.
.
So next up were Diamond Head, now I was in the NWoBHM thing right from
the start, DH were always great but, to be honest, I always felt they
never quite reached their potential, partly due to slightly
dissapointing production/sound on their albums. (Yes I know that "Am I
Evil ?" is one of the best songs ever written by anybody). I know that
some of you lot have always championed the brand, Mutley for one, I
think.
Well I tell you what they were simply SUPERB, absolutely and totally
SUPERB. I had definately underestimated them. I have never seen such a
great band locally, certainly not in the Twist (although
Tattered'n'Torn were indeed an excellent covers band). In fact I
reckon they put in a performance up there with some of the best bands
I have ever seen, and I've seen a few. I was gobsmacked at just how
good they were, I just could not believe it, fanastic.
The new vocalist was one of the best vocallists I have ever seen, he
was perefect for fronting a band, appart from his short hair !
I think that some of the old songs were re-arranged to suit the new
vocalist but that was fine by me. New songs, old songs all brilliant,
I was gobsmacked, Brain Tatler was the proffessional you would expect,
the bassist livend up more and more as the gig went on, he was a live
wire, excellent, they were all good. And the drummer stood up and
apopologised that theye were all knackered and maybe it wasn't their
best night !, what ?, I'll have a pint of what he was drinking.
.
Then of course Am I Evil came up on the set list, could they play this
track, which they must have played a Million times before, up to the
same standard ? Fear not guys, this was simply one of the best Rock
moments of my life, stunning, absolutely total 100 % class.
.
On the "Lightning To The Nations Album" there is a track called
Helpless, to me, maybe, this track typified my views on DH prior to
this gig, it was very close to being great but somehow it just didnt
work, or at least it wasn't as good as maybe it could have been.
Tonight they played (and sang) it like it should have been, indeed it
was one of the best tracks of the night. The brilliant vocalist made
this track sooooo good.
.
Well and truley hooked I am, brother and DTH were so impressed they
had to buy a tee shirt, I would have if I could have afforded it :(
.
Please, if you get the chance go and see them, if they are half as
good as Friday night, I doubt you would be dissapointed. Honestly they
were great.
.
Roll on the new album. One excellent band; Diamond Head.
