Hi Folks,
I need to ask you to make a phone call--we need 20 from Missouri, and 20 from Kansas--and if you're reading this from elsewhere, you can do this in your own congressional district too. Phone information is at the end of this message:
Congressman Kevin Yoder (3rd District, KS, Republican) is one of the 81 legislators going on an AIPAC (American-Israel Public Affairs Committee) "informational" trip to Israel during the August recess. It's a lobby-sponsored trip. The U.S. Campaign to End the Israeli Occupation is asking each member organization (we are one) to get people to phone their congress person to politely ask if he/she is going on the trip, and if the answer is yes, to politely express disappointment, perhaps saying something like, "We have so many problems here at home--it would be so much better if the congressman would concentrate on those." Or maybe, "I'm sorry to hear that. It's disappointing." So call and ask (as if you didn't know), then please express how sorry you are that he's going. Maybe if he hasn't left yet he'll change his mind.
We also need 20 calls from Missouri, but in this case, to THANK Congressman Emanuel Cleaver (Fifth District, Missouri, Democrat) for NOT going on the AIPAC trip. Two of our members have contacted his office, and this is the report: "The Congressman will not be going to Israel. He will spend some of his August vacation traveling around the country promoting job fairs in cities that unemployment is extremely low. The other days he has meetings with constituents." All you have to do is ask to leave a comment, and express thanks that Congressman Cleaver is attending to the necessary business of our own country. Easy. People who do the right thing don't get enough pats on the back, so I hope you'll call.
The aides who answer the phones will be extremely polite and will not contest you. It's easy to just ask to leave a comment and explain that you're a constituent. We've been told that 20 calls is a big deal. Can't we get 20? If you'll do it and let me know, that would be great. As you know, September is going to be a huge deal for the peace process, so we can use this calling opportunity to practice up.
