INSTEAD OF INTRODUCTION: HOW AND WHY DID WE START?

In this, 147th issue of the monthly bulletin we would like to remind the older, and to inform the newer members with the work, importance and basic goals of the Youth Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina. In May of 1999 we started with the publishing of the monthly bulletin with the aim of promotion and report of the work of the organizations in the Network. The bulletin is published in BCS and English language and it is distributed via e-mail to over 3 000 addresses of local and international organizations which work with youth in B&H and abroad. Up to several years ago we were also sending it in printed edition to those organizations which did not posses e-mail address, but since the work on this project is mainly voluntarily, without the funds – we had to cancel the printed edition.

14 years ago, in the July of 1997 on the initiative of hCa – Helsinki Citizens’ Assembly (offices in Tuzla and Banja Luka), two meetings were held on which participated 25 young people from 10 B&H cities. The discussion was about the position of youth and their needs and about the lack of information, contacts and cooperation between youth organizations on the territory of both entities which motivated us to start the project of Youth Network.

We believed that through the establishment and strengthening of regular contacts and cooperation we can diminish the consequences of enmity, hatred, nationalistic tensions and establish the democratic foundations of our society.

In October of 1997 we have organized the Youth Meeting in Laktasi, when the Youth Network B&H (then called hCa Youth Network B&H) officially started with its work.

The Mission of YNB&H was established on the workshop of strategic planning from 11th to 17th of July 1999:

Youth Network of Bosnia and Herzegovina is an informal gathering of non-partisan organizations, groups and persons which satisfy the needs of youth in entities, by involving them actively in the building of democratic values and strengthening of civil society.

We want to use this opportunity to thank those who have contributed to the foundation, strengthening and up-keeping of our network, people and organizations without which the Network would not stand the test of time. We will state just a few names of those who have with their unselfish commitment given a great contribution to the development of youth sector in B&H:

Aleksandra Petric, Miriam Struyk, Lidija Ţivanovic, Emina Babovic, Miralem Tursinovic, Sanela Pasic, Bojana Trninic, Jasmin Besic, Boris Kordic, Amir Avdagic, Danijel Dragicevic, Haris Halilhodzic, Mirna Dabic, Emir Sejranic, Jelena Maksimovic, Jasmin Jasarevic, Aleksandar Trifunovic, Lucijano Kaluza, Samir Halilovic, Edin Mukinovic, Bosko Vlajic, Vojin Jovanovic, Denis Mihic, Zlatko Vasic, Mirko Zecevic –Tadic, Samedin Kurtalic, Mulajma Sabic, Dimitrije Dragovic, Sasa Mandzukic, Samir Halilovic, Mirna Dabic, Adela Kovacevic, Ermin Hajder, and many many others who have gone through this network in the past 14 years.

Since the number of the members is constantly changing, new organizations are introduced, (unfortunately some of them have stopped working) the Youth Network B&H is now consisted of 142 organizations and 56 individuals from the following places from B&H (67, alphabetically): Banovici, Banja Luka, Bihac, Bijeljina, Bosanska Krupa, Bosanski Novi/Novi Grad, Bratunac, Brcko, Breza, Celinac, Derventa, Devetak, Doboj, Doboj – istok, Gornji Vakuf/Uskoplje, Gracanica, Gradiska, Gradacac, Gorazde, Ilidza, Jablanica, Jajce, Kakanj, Kalesija, Kladanj, Konjic, Kotor Varos, Laktasi, Livno, Lukavac, Ljubace, Maglaj, Milici, Modrica, Mostar, Mramor, Mrkonjic Grad, Nevesinje, Novi Travnik, Odzak, Olovo, Osmaci, Priboj, Prijedor, Prnjavor, Rogatica, Rudo, Sarajevo, Sanski Most, Skelani, Srbac, Srebrenica, Stjepan Polje, Sekovici, Siroki Brijeg, Teslic, Trebinje, Tuzla, Vares, Visoko, Visegrad, Vlasenica, Zavidovici, Zenica, Zvornik and Zivinice.

TO HAVE BETTER FUTURE

Humanitarian association of the persons of weak social status “Bolja buducnost” Tuzla is the first humanitarian association for the fight for better existence of the citizens in our area, for improvement of life, better future and for provision of assistance to socially endangered.

Finally, 17 years since war in Tuzla was, by young people – humanists, members of the association “Bolja buducnost” TK, started an action for gathering help so that something positive could be started in this town for the welfare of citizens, because from year to year the situation is getting worse and worse. Every day the number socially endangered and families on the edge of the existence is on the rise (one of the proofs is that Tuzla Canton has the most suicides because of hunger and poverty), while some build fountains, football stadiums and what not.

Because of that, with the help of these young people, we have started the action which will with its humanity and patriotism change all of this. The road will be hard and difficult, and to make it easier we need the help of the citizens, NGOS and all benevolent people. Because of this we ask of you to give us your support to help those who need the help most and to change the negativity brought by poverty, hunger and children suffering.

Become a part of our team so that we can jointly help the endangered in TC.

16TH AND 17TH BOARD MEETING OF VIPK

In the previous period were held two regular meetings of the Board of NGG VIPK. Conclusions:

Reports about realization of activities between the two meetings were adopted and the satisfaction was expressed by the things done for the improvement of life in community, as well as acclamation of the solidarity of the citizens of Konjic;

Besides numerous activities the Board was in the opportunity to send their activists to two seminars, one in Mostar (Alema Potur and Elmedina Alic) and one in Banja Luka (Irma Koric and Ramiza inajetovic), and to successfully organize the humanitarian action for the sick boy Hasan Coric, who is currently undergoing treatment in Zagreb. On this occasion specially by the coordinators the following volunteers were praised: Almin Halebic, Edin Kospo, Almedina Kasic, Elvira Cosic, Amir Buturovic, Ramiza Inajetovic, Muamer Habibija, Nejra Hebibovic from the youth council as well as the members of the BC Igman led by Aladin Bilanovic;

It is important to point out that a qualitative cooperation with the media has been established (Hayat TV – children playgrounds, family Plavcic – TVSA, positive stories from Konjic – TRT), who have in their prime times showed the reports from Konjic;

In the previous period were held numerous meetings with representatives of municipal services and other institutions and close cooperation was established, and the concrete activities with the representatives of the same were arranged. Greeted was the decision of the municipality of Konjic to finally start the reconstruction of the children playgrounds and parks in Konjic;

In further activities VIPKs’ attention focus will be the returning of the basketball polygon in the street CZR to the children of Tresanice, which is for a number of years serving as an illegal parking lot by the unconscious citizens and we will ask by LC Tresanica its reconstruction. It is clear to all that the sports polygon is just one in a row of necessary measures of prevention against deviant behavior of children and youth;

Accepted was the initiative of young volunteers to start with the preparation of activities for research and starting the campaign for the increase of the scholarship to young pupils and students of Konjic, as well as the analysis of the awarding of the same by the municipality of Konjic;

Ph.D. lawyer irma Koric, who was general secretary, has been, on her own suggestion (because of the obligation on the new workplace), removed from this position, and was replaced by Ramiza Inajetovic, also a Ph.D. lawyer. Irma Koric will be assistant to the general secretary. Student of the Faculty for traffic and communications, Azemina Baljeta will lead the TEAM 1 NGG VIPK;

Humanitarian action for the boy Hasan Coric has succeeded and the volunteers of our group have with their work and campaign by the citizens and institutions of Konjic collected 16 000 KM in 15 days;

To all donors of the project “Mission Konjic – Srebrenica Peace March 2010” were sent written reports about the entire project;

Qualitative work of our group has been nominated for the award “THE CITY OF YOUTH”, which is realized by GEC Tuz,la;

The Board has judged and rejected the blackmail of the “phantom” president of LC Tresanica Velija Halilovic, who asked for 30 signatures by citizens, so that he can ask in front of the LC Tresanica the supervisory services to set the physical obstacles and start with the arrangement of that space. This is because around 200 citizens of streets Luka, CZR and IV Muslimanske brigade with open letter from the September of 2010 with arguments sent to the Mayor of Konjic disapproved the means of elections and constitution of the Council of LC Tresanica;

Information about the sending of the written complaint of the citizens for unprofessional behavior of the municipal worker Ejub Miljevic, as well as the praise for the qualitative and pleasant work of Mirza Kevric, also a municipal worker. Both letters were sent to the Mayor of Konjic;

NGG VIPK have sent the request to the Department for Inspection of the municipality of Konjic and the supervisory Police Station in Konjic for the intervention and prevention of vandalism towards the props in the children park in Tresanica by the unconscious citizen Merima “Lola” Sabic;

The commemoration of the death of volunteer Burim Jasari (R.I.P. 03.08.2011).

Main coordinator of NGG VIPK Adis Muhibic has told today to the representative of the organization United Nations Volunteers (UNV) Bojana Batinic in Sarajevo that the members of the group will be support to the program and activities which are planned to be realized in the September in Konjic.

As it was stated, on the meeting was the discussion about the details related to the preparation of few projects in Konjic with local partner organizations which can bring to the improvement of the ambient of life in certain streets of Konjic.

Assistant of the main coordinator Sead Baljeta has presented all the activities which were undertaken until now with the aim of improving conditions and means of the scholarship award by the municipality of Konjic. In the following period is expected the realization of the round table with the youth of Konjic which would analyze the current situation and to determine the directions of acting during this and following election year.

Interlocutors have expressed the optimism and pointed out the need of the mobilization of youth to support the adoption of Law on Volunteerism. Entity government of the Republic of Srpska has formally adopted the Law on Volunteerism. In the Federation of B&H the Law does not exist. Today’s meeting was attended by activists Azemina Baljeta and Azemina Kasic, which have announced the establishing of regional partnership with the Club Youth starts the action from Belgrade within the program Youth in Action.

NEW ACTION “THE PRETTIER THE ENVIRONMENT – THE MORE PLEASANT LIFE”

The action is planned to be held in the IV Muslimanske brigade street MZ Tresanica near the park and the building of B&H Post. The aim is to arrange with building and painting the wall which is mockery now, because it is dirty and mottled with various messages. In this way the children and the citizens of this area will have prettier environment for playing and rest.

“NONVIOLENT SOLUTIONS OF CONFLICT” TRAINING REALIZED

By the end of July in Krizevici, in International youth centre IPAK-SHL, was held a training for youth from Podrinje region in the field of “education of youth leaders in the area of peaceful education in community and development of civil dialogue in local communities of Podrinje region”, on the subject of “nonviolent solutions of conflicts”. The training was supported by the German Ministry for Foreign Affairs IFA. The training was attended by 20 youth activists and members of the organization of ROM za LR (Regional youth network for local development).

On the trainings were done various subjects related to skills of advanced communication: active listening, influence of context on communication, emphatic understanding, layers of listening, active listening in difficult situations, giving of feedback. Besides this the subjects related to leadership were done also: election of leader, responsibility of leader, responsibility of group, avoidance of individual responsibility and consequences of it. The third subject was the power. Within this the following subjects were done: relation towards power, categorization of power, abuse of power, power of cooperation and the power within us.

Focus of these measures was to increase the capacity of participants for qualitative communication. One of the thesis with which we started was that “advanced communication” before everything else implies good listening. And good listening is something you have to work and learn for a long period. In that way, on this training, was achieved a lot on the understanding of the process of listening, thing which complicate it and thing which help it.

Cycle of trainings from this area will be completed by the end of the year.

Our volunteers have experienced unforgettable walks through beautiful forests, which are full of mountain air filled with oxygen, they had creative workshops every day, and the musical samba workshops. They spent cold nights either besides the camp fire with the acoustic guitar or with cinema nights.

“With culture towards the respect of diversity”

As the work starts on new projects, so is the work ending on the earlier started projects. One of such projects is “With culture towards the respect of diversity”. Work on this project started a year ago.

Activities of this project were done in 5 B&H cities: Zivinice, Bratunac, Vlasenica, Bijeljina and Brcko. In all of the cities creative workshops were done:

INTERNATIONAL YOUTH DAY – WHO CARES?

It is hypocritical by the government to congratulate to the youth the Youth Day in country in which the youth are the category for which the least budget funds are determined, where there is no Federal or state ministry for youth, which makes us unique in the region, where more than 50% of youth capable for work does not work, where 2/3 of young people want to leave the country – in country in which the problems for youth are really not cared for?

‘Let them go if they want to, only thing they do is drink coffees all day long!’ will be the common response of the older if you ask them about the youth wanting to leave the country. That they are lazy, that they don’t know how to do things, that they do not study, that they are the parasites on their parents account – are the qualifications which are starting to be all around in our society about the youth. There is truth in all of this, but all things should be looked at with cause and effect. Were the previous generation been given by God so that they were hardworking and industrious, or was there a system which accepted and directed them? Of course there was system which schooled them, prepared them for job, and then found them working places. School sections, youth houses, sport clubs and similar, gave them the additional possibility of development. Student services gave them possibilities of allowance and cheap summer holidays, and parents did not had to expect at any cost engagement of the child “day after receiving the diploma” because they were economically stable. Strong family, at least a lot stronger than this one today, did not leave the space for “youthful maneuvers”, so that the youth had pretty much a straight road. And today?

Let us start with the system. System does not function: nor does it properly educate the staff, nor can it, after the end of education, find them the working space. That is why, my young ones, cope how you can! School sections are still tempting for the primary school pupils, but in the society where the teacher has lost his/hers role of educator and every authority, sections are not interesting and they cannot give results. Youth houses are gone. There are a few youth centers, in the arrangement of NGO sector, which cannot realize those few good ideas because the budget support is minimal or in most cases there is none. Sport clubs are in debts. By millions. So much about them. Student services reflect the general state in the education system. A weak offer. In the end, the family is more weaker and has less effect and independent to be a solid ground for a young man. In some youth don’t even see encouragement anymore, just the expectations.

Why do they drink coffees? – Because they don’t have money for the juice.

Why are they lazy? – Because the country doesn’t show them that the effort pays off.

Why don’t they know how to work? – Because the educational system didn’t teach them how to.

Why don’t they study? – Because the work market mocks them of what they have learned in schools.

They are parasites on their parents account? – Because they have no one else and the state does not help them.

The young ones are sometimes problematic, but that is because they have problems. You should invest in youth to get results. About the youth in B&H society the older ones do not have a great opinion, like they are better. When the older ones realize that the pensions will be greater and the doctors more helpful only then when there are a lot of working posts for the youth and when the youth encouraged ask from government what is theirs, only then will it be better. And until then, the 12th of August should not be mentioned.

On the day of the departure Bosnian Ambassador in Austria will be present, as well as representatives of Austria and international organizations.

Road of peace with bikes starts from Wien towards Banja Luka, and from there for two whole weeks across B&H, including Jajce, Mostar, Srebrenica and Tuzla. On various places across this road are planned meetings with political and religious representatives, with peace, youth and ecological groups, and of course with people who 16 years after the war are still living in hard situation. As a conclusion of this trip was planned the participation on the events of the International Day of Peace of United Nations in Sarajevo on 21st of September.

18 participants aged from 20 to 27 years of age from whole of Austria want, besides everything else, to with this non-violent action find out more about the situation and local initiatives for peaceful coexistence in B&H. besides that, this action should contribute to deepening the contacts between people from B&H and Austria in one European context and to point out and support many positive initiatives in region. Participants want with their example to show that peace, reconciliation and sustainable life starts with small but important steps, where every body can give their contribution.

International Reconciliation Society was founded during the WWI, and since then it contests the war and all means of violence, to contribute to one non-violent solution of conflicts on all levels. Their members are the Nobel Peace Award winners, amongst which the most famous is Martin Luther King. In many countries across the world the Society has contributed to overcoming violent dictatorship, demilitarization and disarmament, and induction of civil service and peace. Austrian branch of the Society  will enable the training for active non-violence and support non-violent initiatives in Colombia, Israel and Palestine and Western Balkans. Since the beginning of wars in ex Yugoslavia the Society was involved in application of around 120 Austrian peace officers in region and it works together with the Centre for non-violent action in Belgrade and Sarajevo.
