Tech in Secondary Ed Final Assignment Aug. 19th. This course was a
great way to do new and exciting lesson plans for my writing block
time. Can't wait to use this project! Thanks for everything, C. J.!
Millennium Assignment ( XTimeline and Wordle are the new virtual
assignments)
Objective: to introduce students to the format of 5 paragraph essay
formatting as they write their own 3 point topic paragraph.
Procedure:
I chose to make a long term lesson plan for my 7th grade computer
writing lab class. This lesson introduces the elements and process of
writing the high school 5 paragraph essay. Although the 5 paragraph
essay is not in the diocesan curriculum till 9th grade, I begin
exposing the students to the concept at the end of 7th through a
partner/class collaboration. They are still writing the basic,
required paragraph, but begin to see how the assembly of this writing
piece is constructed. The same procedure exists for 8th grade, except
that they write the topic paragraph individually and then put the
essay together as a 3 person group.
This class meets once a week; however, I’ve incorporated a few
different virtual resources, as this project will extend over long
time period and will also be done in my regular classroom for the
diocesan required, handwritten segment. This particular class is
extremely bright overall, and totally loves challenges. In fact, they
thrive on it. Of all my classes, this particular class lives and dies
for the computer lab. With this type of enthusiasm, I couldn’t resist
doing a multiple, virtual resource project.
First, there will be a PowerPoint presentation to introduce this
project. It will be done in my classroom on the Monday before computer
lab, thus enabling the students to read the web resources and answer
Google docs. questions. Groups and partners will also be assigned on
Monday. By Thursday, they will have their info in hand through the
docs program (I will also have a spreadsheet to see how they did).
They will then be introduced to the Xtimeline program in class and
start constructing their expository timeline. A print out will be done
for homework and brought in the next day.
This class will then peer edit the next day in my regular
classroom. A handout (copy of the 9th Pwpt. slide) will be
distributed. Corrections will be part of homework.
The rest follows according to the PowerPoint, mostly working in
the lab with certain days in the classroom to do the required
handwritten sections. Once papers are finished they are turned in and
kept in folders in the classroom for the permanent record files.
Students are already familiar with the double copy of all papers
procedure.
At the end of this assignment, the lab will be used to discuss and
model using Google Images onto a PowerPoint (this is basically geared
towards my learning disabilities and any new students who are
unfamiliar with the program. The rest will be working to assemble the
brief PowerPoint.
There will also be a lesson in my regular classroom to show how
to use Wordle.
This will be done for homework, printed out twice and brought to class
to use as a cover sheet for the permanent file copy and the test
folder copy to go home for review.
The following shows the document line up to this lesson plan.
