December 06, 2009
Ibragim Yaganov, one of the leaders of the Circassian public organization Khase, was hospitalized on December 5 after being
assaulted and severely beaten at the entrance to the organization's office in Nalchik. Five days earlier, Ruslan Keshev, leader of the public organization Adyghe Khase, was the victim of an
identical assault. Both Yaganov and Keshev had been insulted and vilified during a televised "
Forum of Youth For Inter-Ethnic Harmony" that took place in Nalchik on November 28.
Yaganov said the people who
attacked him on December 5 told him, "We are Muslims, not Circassians," and he inferred from that statement that at least some members of the Kabardino-Balkaria Republic police force have joined forces with Muslim radicals against those Circassians perceived as being in opposition to the republic's leadership. In recent weeks, Khase has campaigned publicly for the repeal of legislation on redistricting that would
transfer thousands of hectares of mountain pastures to Balkar-populated villages.
Yaganov expressed amazement at such a tactical alliance, given that it was indiscriminate reprisals by police and devout but law-abiding young Muslims that impelled the latter to launch multiple attacks against police and security facilities in Nalchik in October 2005.
Yaganov criticized KBR President Arsen Kanokov for failing to publicly condemn the attack on Keshev. He further denied that Khase has had any contact with the opposition to Kanokov, let alone that it has "been bought" by the opposition and aspires to seize power through the violent overthrow of the present republican leadership.
Khase for its part released a statement accusing the republic's leadership of resorting to violence rather than seeking to resolve differences through "constructive dialogue."
Khase had planned to convene a meeting in Nalchik on December 5 to demand the annulment of the controversial draft law, but canceled it on December 4 under pressure from the municipal authorities.

At meeting of December, 5th in Nalchik bloodshed is supposed
Under some operative information got to the office of the public movement “Khasa” on December, 4th, it began known about plans to destabilize the situation in KBR, using the meeting of December, 5th. The basic question of the meeting, as it is known, is the agrarian question and the returning of pastures to the villages they had earlier owned. According to a source, an attack peace citizens by well paid criminals during the meeting to initiate a massive fight in the crowd is planned.
Besides it, near "Spartak" stadium there will be lorries with employees of militia special troopers, ready to rush into the crowd with nightsticks and to stop disorders rigidly, having beaten all "objectionable". Thus the meeting will be broken; the first purpose of the attackers will be the leaders of the public organizations and their supporters. According to the source, probably, there could be an attempt of murdering of the key figures. Within the last two days in the republic active work of the administrative resources for prevention citizens’ participation in the meeting was organized; there is a notification on the radio and TV that the meeting was canceled.
They also use threats about dismissals, intimidation with administrative penalties and even physical violence against those who would come to the meeting. Militia employees received the precise instructions - to detain everyone who goes to the square, militia workers got armoured vests, helmets and automatic guns. As we know, those, who plan the attack peace citizens, are most likely, people of the same nationality; and that fact automatically initiate a civil war inside the Adygeyan people. Accordingly, the responsibility for the results of all of that possible fight would belong to the crippled public men whom after being in hospital, would be jailed for so-called “massive disorders”.
Those methods reminded many participants of the events of the times of the opposition in the 90s when the management had used the same administrative oppression, but thus never openly used criminals or sportsmen for neutralization of the public. Relatives worrying for the lives of the leaders of public organizations, try to dissuade in every possible way them from carrying out of the action.
We hope that the meeting will not be written down in the history as the beginning of the fratricidal opposition, and the process will not get beyond the legal field. We call all the participants for prudence and restraint, we ask to not give in on provocation and to not forget that for all of us still should live in one republic a lot of years.

State of Khasa” leader’s health does not cause fear
The state Ibrahim Yaganov’s health has considerably improved. Beating, may be, would not cause serious consequences. His friends informed about it to NatPress, being with a visit to the beaten man who is still in the hospital.
“I spoke with him, - one of them told by phone, - they had been beating him basically on his head; and extensive hematoma under his eye was formed. But, probably soon, he could leave the hospital”.
As NatPress’ respondent noted, now in the hospital about 50 sympathizing people gathered.
