Friends in Chennai, you are warmly invited to the screening of  'Naach' (The Dance) on Monday, July 16, 6pm at the Russian Centre of Science & Culture, 74 Kasturi Ranga Road, Alwarpet, Chennai.

I will be present to introduce the film and for post screening discussion.

Naach (TheDance) - Synopsis

The Sonpurcattle fair in rural Bihar comes alive every evening when more than fifty girlstake to the stage and dance for an all male audience. A barbed wire fenceseparates the performers from the spectators.

Originally partof the nautanki, a popular folk theatre genre of north India, the dance of thefemale performer today has become a replay of Bombay films and music videosthat span rural and metropolitan landscape. It is a performance charged withsexual energy. The girls dance, make eye contact, beckon, gesticulate and evenabuse a highly responsive all male audience.

What meaningsrelated to contemporary construction and practice of gender, sexuality, labourand popular culture can we read in the dance of the female performer?
