Sandy and I drove over to Jasper-Pulaski SWMA in Indiana and spent a
good part of the morning watching the Sandhill Cranes come and go.
For those who has never gone over there it is well worth the trip. I
believe they had the count at around 10.000 or more. For those that
would like to go I will suggest that you go in the morning or early
afternoon at the latest. The observation tower faces west so that
the later in the day you go it will have you squinting into the sun.
Also bundle up the tower is right out in the open with nothing to
block the wind so if you are not dressed for it you will find yourself
cutting your observation time dramatically. Another tip is that after
you have had enough at the tower drive around some of the back roads
( mostly gravel ) and you will find the cranes out in the fields, and
at times you will be much closer then at the tower. I have posted a
