Rental Car + Trailer Package?

I'm reading that rental car services don't offer a towing package due
to liability, which makes sense. I've never trailered anything but am
interested in possibly doing so for two separate trips, one for Easter
and another for Derby. I'm open to suggestions about beginner safety
and awareness.
Basically, I'm driving to DC for Easter and KY for Derby, hopefully
with the bike in tow. Assuming the car/trailer are separate issues,
I'm looking to rent a car (with a hitch) from a rental company and a
trailer from one of you fine folks ($ in your pocket).
Anyone have an angle for me to attack all of this from? Resources? I'd
sure hate to have to leave the bike behind while I'm gone. There's
likely to be some nice riding out there.
Side Note: If you have a simple trailer that you'd like to sell, I'll
consider it. I can't afford much but something simple that is freeway

You are better off just renting a van or pickup and tossing the bike in the back.
It'll be much less hassle and more secure than dealing with a trailer. plus the only rental vehicles with hitches that i've ever come across are vans/pickup or full Sized SUVs.
Although if you are super crafty you can rent a car, buy a trailer hitch for said rental car, install it yourself. and be on your way.
then after your trip, remove the trailer hitch, return it to the store, get refund, and then return the rental car.
they usually don't check for holes drilled in the frame rails when you return a rental car.
I did this about 10 years ago when i wanted to bring my sailboat from Virginia to Chicago but didn't own a car.
it worked out great but it was a bunch of extra hassle.
Just get a van

and ride it around for a few days.

Agreed.
Last year I went to the southernmost point of the continental U.S., while riding a rented "Night Rod" V Rod, either way I looked like a rod of sorts while riding it. I was never so anxious to get home and get my KZ running.

I've pulled a bike trailer all over the place and it's fine on the
highway but a pain when you need to park. Keep in mind the small cheap
trailers usually have tires only rated to 65 mph. If you do go that
route, make sure you have a spare trailer tire, and replace the hitch
pins with locking pins, both at the receiver and the hitch.
