Are gradual restrictions placed on QIM, prior to registering ? All of
a sudden I don't have any access to TC input, with no problems
before.

I know the obvious solution, pay up ! But I'm feeling a little tight
so won't be able to register for a little bit.

Dear Tom:

QIM is a shareware and have no restriction before you input 10,000
hanzi or in 30 days.
So, I think one of these limitations is reached.
In fact, I've already claimed these limitations in the QIM
installer, If you read it when you install QIM then you won't think it
is a "sudden" action :-)

Is there any reason to use QIM over the Apple provided input methods?

Dear Tom,

I have been used Apple's methods for a while and after just using QIM for a few weeks i gladily paid the shareware fee even when it was in its beta version. Although the Chinese Mac site supplies a lot of information, here are a few I particularly like:

(these features are not part of the Apple input methods)

- change the tone throught the tab to retrict the number of candidate characters; you can choose to ignore tones to input as in other input methods but when you have a long list of characters, using tab-tone selection does wonders.

- phrases and words suggested even in Full form input

- adjustment of the interface such as fonts, size and some colours, transparency

- very clever guesses made when you delete characters to find the string you require

Hope this helps

henry Leperlier

I hope you won't regret your decision. The support from the developer is quite good; better than my spelling and syntax suffering from acute jetlag.

I have been in Taiwan for a few days and wonder if there is any solution to fixing encoding received from someone using Hotmail servers. I have tried sending them in Big5 and UTF-8 but since my correspondents gladly ignore any suggestions as to going to the encoding on the browser (probably from acute embarrassment), it's up to me to try to fix it. Of course once they use Outlook Express there is no problem.
It seems that they don't see my Chinese text and sometimes their answers have blanks instead of Chinese characters. Also, the problem is also common with PC users and might be system language dependent.

Maybe a section could be devoted to this kind of problem on the Chinese Mac site?

There is a link to a Chinese language tutorial on how to change the
hotmail encoding on the group FAQ (this is different than the official
FAQ, as group members can edit it):

Thanks Kerim, I did look at a lot of places, amazing that Unicode is especially useful for Chinese but still not widely used. I've noticed that it's mainly companies having business on the two sides of the strait that are aware of it.

Hi,

three weeks ago I have bought a 2.2GHz MacBook Pro in
Taipei and had since replaced the Chinese (bopomofo)
keyboard with a German one (my mother languange) for
NT$2,600.

I now want to sell the bopomofo keyboard. I just used
it for two weeks and it is as good as new - if anyone
is interested, please e-mail me off-list.

Cheers,
Markus
