What type of professional development events would we like to host or
participate in?

Hey gang,

We are putting together a professional development half day program
for the month of November. We think Oak Park Public may be a good
venue. We need help hammering down a theme and possible free speakers.
We think someone from OPPL may talk about their GLBT collection, and
someone from Skokie may discuss their role in the ethnic fair. We
would like 1 or 2 more people and a broad theme.

Thanks,

Tony

Hi,

This sounds great to me. It's good to see some professional
development activities in the works.
I hope to be able to announce our first literacy volunteer opportunity
soon as well.

The general theme of service to specific subsets of the population
fits our mission quite nicely.
This doesn't need to be specific to services IN the library either.
Representing civic librarianship by
having someone talk about library-sponsored events in the community
sounds perfect.

Do any of the folks who expressed interest in professional development
have thoughts about this?

Hey-
I have some ideas, but first I have a question. Are you looking for
ideas that would be applicable to all librarians or would you also
like some that would focus on more youth, teen, adult, academic, etc
etc?

I think we might want to try to keep things broad -- don't you think?

Yeah- broader sounds good to begin with.
For part of our staff inservice day this year at the library I work at
we're looking at best practices in regards to Web 2.0- for example
effectively using a wiki to communicate in your department- every
department and committee has a wiki but some setups/methods work
better then others, or using google calendar to your department's
schedule instead of a using a paper copy etc - So not much what Web
2.0 technologies but how they can help things run smoother or how to
use them to communicate and share information most effectively-
perhaps a panel discussion made oup of short presentations on how an
individual, library, department has used any web 2.0 technologies to
benefit them.

Sometime in November in Oak Park, eh? Keep me informed especially when
the date firms up. I will need to ask my boss for a day off so I can
attend.
