My daughter Veronica and I rescued this chicken from an alley near our house in Logan Square. She was promptly named "Martha" by my children and we've been keeping her in our back yard and feeding and sheltering her for the past few days.
Martha is a very amicable chicken, is friendly with people and is clearly used to being in an urban/small flock environment. And she is very quiet.
I'm trying to find a good home for Martha with the hope that she might end up somewhere nearby so my daughter might visit her once in awhile. But, that said, we're mostly interested in placing her with someone who is capable and has the resources to take good care of her.
If you are interested or know someone who is interested, please give me a call or leave a message here.

Great to hear from you. Would it be possible to.meet up on Saturday to bring the chicken over? My daughter would like to see where Martha is going to. Please let me know if this will work and what time works best for you.

Haha... When you said that, I imagined one of those Looney Tunes cartoons
where a living, personified chicken changed to a roasted chicken with
little caps on the legs!

"Martha" definitely looks like a broiler breed. Not sure about it being a rooster. Those broiler breeds can present a lot of complications, from what I've read. They eat a lot and can become crippled by all the weight they are bred to put on.

The Cornish-cross chickens have yellow feet, and from the photo, it looks like this hen has blue feet? Her breast does not look wide enough to be a meat bird, and her feet are not far enough apart. She doesn't look that stocky to me. Hens of some breeds can definitely have combs and wattles as large as this bird -- or even bigger. When I saw her, I immediately thought she was a hen. Unless she has the long dangly feathers around her tail (which we can't see in the photo), I'd say it is a hen. I'm not sure about the breed because any breed of chicken can be white. They're called "sports" and can pop up from colored parents.

Just wanted to share the news that Martha has been adopted and is joining two other hens in a friendly coop on Chicago's Northwest side.
I'm no expert so I don't the breed or how she ended up in an alley behind Milwaukee Ave. I'm just glad she has a good, safe home and that my kids and I had the pleasure of her company for a couple days.
I've always wanted urban chickens and this experience, combined with hopefully getting a larger yard in the future, is leading us to joining all the rest of you crazy chicken folks here on CCE.
Thanks to everyone who helped me navigate this community and find Martha a home.
Best,
Steve Timble
