Hi!

am now integrating lexical data across CHAT files... want to come up with a "LEXICON x AGE" table extracted from 10-15 CHAT files... the "freq +d2 +t*CHI *.cha" does this beautifully, but it outputs the lexical items in columns. I am afraid I am using MS Excel 2002 which has a maximum of  256 columns, but 65536 rows... is there a way to get the lexical data in rows instead of columns? attached is the output file (kindly ignore other issues... i realize i need my team to fix our headers... :-)

Thank you!

Joyce

if its not possible in CLAN, i expect i can run it in another computer which has MS  Excel 2007, the worksheet size is 16384 columns by 1048576 rows

though if it can be managed in CLAN, that would be helpful. the other computers we use are use .ods files with the same limitations as MS Excel 2002.

Dear Joyce,

Here is what the Microsoft pages at msdn.microsoft.com say:

Starting in Excel 2007, the "Big Grid" increases the maximum number of rows per worksheet from 65,536 to over 1 million, and the number of columns from 256 (IV) to 16,384 (XFD).

If you update your version of Excel, then having 16,384 columns would hopefully be enough.

Hi Joyce

Yes, in both Microsoft Excel (.xls) and Openoffice/LibreOffice (.ods) you can
transpose as follows (using OpenOffice, but Microsoft Excel is similar):
(1) Select the cells you are interested in.
(2) Select Edit -> Copy.
(3) Select Insert->Sheet to insert a new sheet. Go to that sheet and click in
the top left-hand cell.
(4) Select Edit -> Paste Special.
(5) In the Options dialogue, check the Transpose checkbox, and then click OK.
I'm attaching your test file, with (on the second sheet) the transposed data.

Of course, this only works if you can load the full output file to begin with.
Since you can't, there is the option of upgrading to a new version of
Microsoft Excel, as Brian has suggested, or (preferably) upgrade OpenOffice. The
latter is cheaper, since it's free, and I would suggest going for LibreOffice
rather than OpenOffice, since the former (based on the same code as the latter)
has more developers working on it:
http://www.libreoffice.org
There's really very little reason to spend money on Microsoft Excel nowadays
unless you are using spreadsheets with lots of macros in them, which by
definition you (and probably 99% of other users) are not.

If it's impossible for you to upgrade even to LibreOffice, post again, because
it may be possible to write some code to do the transposition - so far as I
can see, the output file is just plain csv with no vendor-specific xls stuff.

Joyce,

CLAN will have a SPREADSHEET command by the end of today, that will rotate any CLAN spreadsheet output on its side, turning columns into row and vice versa.

Leonid.

I  would like to thank Leonid for uploading a new version of CLAN that solved the problem. The following worked beautifully:

Joyce,

Command "spreadsheet stat.frq.xls" create a new Excel file called "stat.frq.spread.xls". That is the file you need to open with your Excel 2002 application.

Leonid.
