Hi,

I changed my computer very recently and since then I am unable to
transcribe a sound.

Each time I try I have the same error message "error reading sound
file(1)" followed by the location of the sound file.

I tried to re-install CLAN or Quicktime, but it didn't work.
Now I have CLAN version 13 from 20 March and Quicktime version 7.7.1
and as OS, I have Windows Seven.

I am quite sure, it is something very simple to fix but I can't find
where is the problem.

If anyone have a solution to this problem, I will be very grateful.

Dear Christophe,

One possible cause of this is that newer versions of QuickTime (and hence CLAN) seem to have become less permissive in the range of sound file types they allow. Why don't you send me a copy of your sound file and I can try to replicate the problem? Also, you could try to modify the sound file format to see if that helps. Can QuickTime play the sound file directly outside of CLAN?

Dear Brian,

I have tried to change the format of the sound. I created a wav file
and a wav mono file and a new mp3 128kps file but nothing worked. I
opened all these files with quicktime, and it plays all these sound
files (though when I click on the sound file it opens it in quicktime
(I define quicktime as my default player) but I still have to click on
play to hear it). I restarted my computer each time I installed a new
version of a software, nothing worked...

I am a kind of desperate.

I am sending you the audio file on your email account.

Thanks a lot for your help and your time,

Christophe,

This error message means that CLAN can't either find media file or your PC is missing a winmm.dll. Make sure that media file name on @Media tier matches actual media file name minus file extension. Also, make sure that file extension is .wav for wave encoded media file. If your PC is missing winmm.dll, then install Microsoft Windows Media Player. CLAN doesn't use quicktime for audio media.

Dear Leonid,

I think that finally I found the problem.
It is not a problem of winmm.dll (the sounds worked with all the other
softwares I have installed on my computer). I will make it short
because the story of all my tries is quite long. Just to let you know
that at one point all my test were done from the desktop of my
session. From that place, I downloaded all the previous version of
CLAN and I discovered that the F5 button was working with 2007 and
2008 clan version. I also noticed that these version of CLAN had
trouble with my user name (the administrator name in my case). As I
opened the clan file from my desktop the address of the sound file
included my user name ( D:\Documents\Alcaçuz\Desktop ).
As you can see, my user name has a special character in it, namely
"ç". Then I move the files on the root (D:\ ), where my user name will
play no role and I didn't have the error message anymore.
Then I strongly suppose that it comes from this special character in
my name. Could you confirm that it could be the source of the problem.

Thanks for your help,

Hi

I confirm that the presence of a non ascii characters in the directory
name of the working file (wherever in the hierarchy) prevents CLAN from
playing correctly videos (didn't know about sounds) under Windows. I got
the habit of saying to my students nether to do that.

Thanks Christophe,

I will tell the same to my students now.
The interesting fact is that older versions of Childes (e.g. the 2007
for example) seem to support non-ASCII character in the directory
name.

I would agree that this is new, because I didn't notice it before, but
it's no specific to windows 7, it is also true with windows XP.
So it could be related to some changes in CLAN.

Thanks to both Christophe for determining the cause of the bug. I don't know how this bug was created especially since Mac version of CLAN, that shares the same code with Windows version, works correctly. I have fixed the bug with audio files, but at this time I am still unable to fix it for video files on PCs. New PC CLAN is on childes web site.

Quick update on the matter of non-ASCII filenames. I have fixed the way QuickTime handles non-ASCII characters in filenames or their path. QuickTime is not only responsible for playback of most of the video file formats on PC, but also handles mp3 audio files playback. Now it should be possible for CLAN to playback any media files that have non-ASCII characters.
