Karl Denninger matter-of-factly tried to put me out of business back in 1995
even though I was one of his first customers and sent his scores of new
clients. He just routinely changed my purchased domain name without notice.
I painstakingly left MCS (while simultaneously losing hundreds of contacts)
and spent several months luring other victims away from MCS like leading
children from a fire. I switched to ANET and haven't had a problem since.
It's ironic to see that people are still complaining about Karl even after
he has left the building. He was the worse thing to ever happen to Internet
connectivity in Chicago. Good riddens.

Ummm ... I think you're largely the only person who's called Karl
incompetent and do-nothing, and by all accounts the company's gotten far
worse since he sold it. Self-centered is a frequent complaint about Karl,
yes, but do-nothing and incompetent do not reflect upon a guy who build
one of the biggest ISPs in Chicago and then started elsewhere. In fact,
most of the complaints were about his tendency to do too much.
It sounds as if you have some long-standing "issues" with the guy -- as
many seem to do -- but next time please consider letting the facts get in
the way of your arguments when appropriate.

I just hate the fact that MCS has gone straight to Hell since he left. Yep,
posting from my new enteract account. Very cool place. Get accounts with
them.

Winstar (or whoever) seems to be capable of doing it themselves just
fine, based on the recent complaints.

You are the only one doing the complaining, get over it, he's gone.
Karl - "do-nothing" - ?
This is an oxymoron if I've -ever- heard one! ^o.O^
Karl left a lot to be desired in the personality department. It was almost
comical - like an ISP run by Eeyore at times. (Can you just see the donkey
of Pooh fame sitting behind the keys?)
But Karl knew what he was doing. And he did it well. Most every complaint
about MCS under Karl's care was about it being less than perfect. People
would freak if the dial up was inaccessible for ten minutes or news was
inaccessible at 4am. These folks had -no- idea what most ISPs are like.
From what I can tell, valid complaints about Karl as regard the technical
side of things are few and far between.

You got that right.
Whenever you see a thread created to knock somebody, you can bet it's
authored by an ignoramus with a vendetta.

What he 'knew' he did reasonably well, but there were some gaping holes
in his knowledge.

He never did figure out how to spool news to UUCP. Always blaming it on
the hardware, he trippled the price of the feed, on the promise of ' new
hardware, new software'. Six months later, the feed was just as bad at
three times the price. That's when I dumped it. (A number of people with
UUCP feeds were comparing the articles sent down the feed, with the
articles on the nntp server - the feed missed about 25-40% of the
articles).

I'm in the middle of the Information Superhighway
I agree. Karl might have been a piece of work, but he sure as hell knew
what he was doing. Some people don't realize how much of a pain in the
ass it is to switch 4 clients' dedicated lines to other ISPs because
MCS, as your said, has gone straight to hell. Billing has been f*'d up
and so has the support. I told them 3 months ago that if service didn't
improve, I'm pulling four dedicated accounts, and now that's exactly
what I'm doing. I tend to wonder how much Karl got for those 4 accounts
anyway.
