I've been hearing so much about Henry Hyde's impossible bi-partisanship and
near-metaphysical honesty that I've begun to wonder if Mr. Hyde actually grew
up in a log cabin and ended the Civil War with one hand tied behind his back
and the other drafting the Emancipation Proclamation.
Or as Bob Dole said today in a speech yesterday in Texas: "The American people
are fortunate. We are all very fortunate because we have Henry Hyde from
Illinois Chairing the Judiciary Comittee.
He is one of the most non-partisan, fair-minded individuals in Washington
and this is the biggest responsibility in his career."
Oh, please. Henry Hyde was one of the most strident apologists for Ronald
Reagan during Iran-Contra, when he distinguished himself as an utterly
unbiased, single-minded, monolithic defender of all things GOP, from
Iran-Contra diversions of funds to Salvadoran coverups. His leadership role on
the House Judiciary right now is, at best, partisan and, at worst, scary.
Thank you for this link to the first media account I have seen that is honest
about Henry Hyde.

Let's see...this affair (which involved no criminal activities) occurred in
the mid-1960's. This was before Bill Clinton was old enough to smoke dope
or dodge the draft. Speaking of smoking dope, Clinton's "no sexual
relations" reminds me an awful lot of "I didn't inhale".

When I told my mother the "buzz" that's been circulated for months
(how fortunate we're supposed to be that the "patrician" Henry
Hyde is chairing the Judiciary Committee), she was incredulous.

Washington DC today reminds me of an sf story from a long time
ago -- it may be Asimov. Seems someone was selling TVs that,
on a special channel, showed somebody's bedroom. Of course,
the TVs were all rigged with hidden cameras. [The technology
is here today -- is this THAT farfetched? Or is it real, and the
medium is merely videotape?] When the protagonist and his
uncle realized this, after sending the story to the papers, his
uncle said, ending the story ... "Welcome to the fishbowl ..."
