Does anyone know when Foster and Western got it's red light camera?

I received data on that intersection from 2001 thru 2006 today.

Once again, a bit about the data... it was obtained via FOIA request from
Illinois Department of Transportation. If a field is blank it's because
that field was omitted or blank on the report, if a field contains 0, it's
because it was on the report and had 0 in it (at least that's the rule I
tried to follow)

Links to the data is provided below (if you want the PDF's, please copy them
as I'm over my disk quota and I should send Bruce donut money as it is). You
should view the pdf's as I can make mistakes, just ask sticks...

Data is for Foster at Western (Foster is a numbered highway so they can
search on it easily).

certainly the need to plug it in to a computer for updates is a _major_
weakness, since (based on my layman's understanding of human factors)
it's going to be the new camera one doesn't know about that will nail
one.

It looks like the perfect speedster accessory for ricers, beemers, H2's
and their tonka wonderpals.

oops. No mac support. well, ok. hmmm...nothing about battery life.
ah... lighter power. wonder what the current draw is... could it suck
down a battery over a long weekend? good question, but probabl not.
weight --320 grams! -- that's 3/4 pounds!! good god man! that'll cause
problems down the road, so to speak.

I'm betting it doesn't work .31416X as well as they make it sound. Of
course, i my brane still hears Omega when someone says GPS, so...
ooh. the company is from Scotland, so mebby it's no crap.

let's buy one for everyone who used all caps or the word "idiot" in a
RLC thread this year and field test it. At $300 bucks a pop it would be
worth it.

So the question is: will the people who have one of these use them to
drive more carefully in the vicinity of RLCs or to blow through
uninstrumented intersectons?

y' know, like the people with radar detectors simply use them as a tool
to assure their continuous compliance with traffic laws and not as a way
to evade speed enorcement?

True, perhaps each city should provide wifi updates as you enter the town
as to the speed limits and red light camera locations? Cars could process
this automagically and limit your speed on the roads to the posted limits...

I think you mean bimmer... I don't think a beemer would be caught dead with
a mirror that size... I wouldn't have known the difference if EPBrown hadn't
explained it to me when I did the same thing...

They might have more rear end collisions since theyd be glued to watching
the mirror instead of the road... plue I think the manual update process
might always leave a shadow of a doubt... so maybe they will drive better
all the time?

Wasn't it Jesse Ventura who said radar detectors are for people who can't
pay attention?

Hmmmmm, i found the quote in lots of places;

"To paraphrase former Minnesota governor Jesse Ventura:
Radar detectors are a crutch for the inattentive driver."

Interestingly enough http://www.laborlawtalk.com/showthread.php?p=310632 is
posted by some guy name "Scott in Aztlan"... you wouldn't happen to know
him would you?

I got my first after my first speeding ticket. Turns out that if I had had
a detector I'd have known the cop was apparently running a scam, getting
one juicy reading in the morning and then charging everyone he stopped
that day with doing that speed. (He was no longer on the police force by
the time the ticket got to court. The department tried to prosecute the
ticket anyway, without the first-hand testimony of the arresting officer.
The judge caught it and told the prosecutors they had ten minutes to
nonsuit every single ticket in that courtroom with that cop's name on
it.)

John, you driveling imbecile. Do you understand the difference between
something Scott said and something Jesse Ventura said? Concentrate
very carefully now.

Although possibly Scott and Jesse are one of those tag teams Brent
is so keen at detecting. You'd have to ask him.

Nothing like capitalism.

She's out of town this week so I can't check it right now but my wife has
one of those TomTom GPS systems and they've been marking the red light
cameras here in the city for a while now.

I think it prints a red square and says "warning". She didn't even know why
it was doing that for a while and finally put 2+2 together. I think we only
paid like what that mirror costs ($299 plus tax) and the TomTom seems
handier since you can carry it around.

Does seem to crash alot when taking the updates, usually needs to be rebooted
a couple times then it behaves itself.

About that fuel computer scan device you are tinkering with, good luck
getting any additional miles per gallon with it. I've had those fuel
computers in all my cars since 1990 (factory ones) and after the novelty
wears off, they are pretty useless.

The main problem is, since you can't control traffic and road conditions,
eventually you are going to find any savings being eaten up by something out
of your control and end up where you started.

Plus you start observing odd things. Like on the Kennedy from Lawrence to
O'Hare, light traffic, my Lincoln (4.6L V8) shows a fairly normal 18mpg
doing the speed limit. On the way back, the instant economy mode is usually
in the 35-40mpg range. I'm not sure if it's slightly uphill going there and
downhill back, but I've observed that about a dozen times already. After the
Edens/Kennedy junction at Irving, it seems to go back down to 18mpg and
worse as you approach downtown.

I know that doesn't average out accurately with the constant 22~25mpg it gets
on long trips (like Chicago to Houston TX) but just pointing out there are
factors beyond your control to figure out a squeeze of every gallon.

The only thing I found useful is to determine if an alternate route to
somewhere is of any benefit. But again it has to be a longer trip to make
use of any fractional values. Weather conditions and tire pressure probably
have more of a bearing than driver habits, especially one who is already
"not hot rodding" to being with.

Just saying they aren't as useful as you think they are.

"Hmmmmm, i found the quote in lots of places" ... all of which happened to
be the fake quote in scott's sig.

But go ahead pretending it was supposed to be some kind of inscrutable
joke or something. It's no more nonsensical than 90% of what you write,
so someone might buy it.

arrrrr....

There are some folks in the paddling newsgroup that have bumperstickers
saying something to the effect of "You deserve a good paddling" (I don't
as I'm not a bumper sticker person). I do still owe you some videos and
perhaps this weekend I'll end up with some freetime... most of my weekends
are still consumed with activities, but as sports seasons end and it gets
colder, I should get down lake shore drive with the camera on the front of
the car.
