Hi Kev, according to US News & World Reports on ranking of Art graduate
(MFA) programs, U Michigan-Ann Arbor ranked #26 and Northwestern ranked #80
out of 89 programs. See
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/beyond/gradrank/gbfinart.htm .

Interestingly, the School of the Art Institute of Chicago ranked as the best
MFA school in the nation. Unranked Fine Arts and Performing Arts programs at
smaller specialized art schools are listed at
http://www.usnews.com/usnews/edu/college/rankings/special/art_spec.htm . The
Kendall College of Art and Design and Center for Creative Studies are
located in Grand Rapids and Detroit.

Gourman Reports ranked New York Univ #1 in nation, especially in performing
arts and film.

In general, I would think that the best art schools are going to be around
the nation's best cities for the fine arts, Boston, New York City, DC,
Chicago, San Francisco, Philadelphia. I would also consider the Northeastern
sector of the country as they would have schools that are the oldest and
most mature.

I'd also consider highly an art school that coops with an art school outside
the US, especially with Europe, South America, or the Far East.
