Cherokee News
The Dog Days of summer are here once again and the beginning of school is just around the corner. It has been my honor to create the Cherokee News these past few years. I've gotten to know a lot of people and attended a lot of events that I might not have otherwise. However, my career as an office manager at a church in NW Austin has evolved and I now write the monthly publication for the church, and maintain the church website in addition to my book-keeping and membership duties, and of course continue to develop and maintain various other websites. Now, with school starting, my time will be even more limited so I am officially handing over the reins to Sue Rhoades who will be writing the news. Thank you Sue!... more »

Cherokee News, Week of June 17, 2007
Well folks, I didn't intend to take a break from doing the news but school ended, things got hectic and I just plain forgot two weeks in a row and managed each time to recall that I 'hadn't' done the news much later in the week. We have finally settled into our summer routine so perhaps there will be no further breaks.... more »

Cherokee News - Week of May 20, 2007
Cherokee Day at the Cherokee Home for Children is Saturday. Everyone is invited to come out and tour the facilities and have a BBQ lunch with the children and staff. You can come as early as 9:00am. The strangest things happen in Cherokee- most of which have to do with heavy metal. Not the music mind you, but 'heavy' metal! Last year someone called and asked if they could have some tin for a roof and that the tin I had at the barn was exactly what was needed. Well, since there were several stacks of tin in the barn and I didn't need all of it I told them they could have some. You can imagine my dismay when I walked out the door and realized that the tin that was needed was on my barn roof and half of it had been removed! Well, the tin on my barn roof was replaced in a timely manner and all is well. Then, a few weeks ago I received a call about a 'community project' and I was asked about having some of the old appliances hauled off. Recalling the barn roof incident, my initial answer was no, but when asked specifically about an old non working washer or dryer I agreed that those could be hauled off and when asked if there was anything further I specified that there were a few things on the East side of the house just outside the door like a couple of non-working vacuums, and typewriter or two. Imagine my dismay when I learned that my BBQ grill (which we and our guests use regularly) was gone along with two wood stoves and a round pen consisting of 13 panels which I have had on loan for the past 12 years, belonging to my father! Beyond those things the house had been accessed, a door pushed in the wrong way, knocked off it's hinges which are now bent at a 45 degree angle and the storage shed door was knocked in. I've been a home/property owner more years than I was ever married and in all those years, I've just never experienced anything like this. Anyway, if anyone calls you about hauling off your appliances, beware, it might be more than you specify that gets hauled off.... more »

(Note for Editor: The attached photo is Ashley Cockrum modeling a dress at the Fairy Godmother Foundation. Photo credit to Kit McGuire of Lago Vista, Texas) Cherokee was blessed with rain early Monday morning. I'm fairly certain that everyone who needs a prom or otherwise formal dress for graduation and other end of school year ceremonies has found one but if not, I want to tell you about the Fairy Godmother Foundation which is based out of Leander, Texas. This is an organization that loans formal dresses and all the trimmings (shoes, jewelry) for special occasions at no charge. You can learn more about the Fairy Godmother Foundation at: [link] You can also read more about the Foundation later this week on the Cherokee, Texas website.... more »
