Hello everyone. I'm trying to start a rural hacker space out ere in
Amberley and since I have no experience with this sort of thing I was
wondering if you guys could give me some advice on how to start and
invite anyone interested to join up here.

A couple of people out here are interested in joining (one of the
specifically wants to join as an excuse to teach motor mechanics) and
one of the writers at Hurunui News has asked to write an article for
me.

My main concern is that I'm currently working on the theory that if I
get the people meeting each other something is bound to happen as a
result of it eventually.

Anyway, looking forward to hearing from you guys. Hope I don't sound
rude.

Hey Ryan,

I was one of the crafters with the Spacecraft.

I loved the mix of craft and geekery. I would encourage you to consider that dynamic - to have it open to hackers/geek/computer nerds AND crafters. The crafters (mostly, but not all chicks) are generally more sociable, and the fact that they are working on tangible hands on projects can give life to what could often become a room of guy geeks staring at their screens.

Motor mechanics sounds GREAT! I would have loved that here.

OK just a thought or two, best of luck,

Briar

Find a place, invite some people, publicise it. :)

Yeah, that's pretty much the approach we took. It worked well for
about 18 months but over time things came to a halt.

I think having people dedicated to making things happen makes a
difference--we also never had a permanent venue and I don't know how
much difference that makes.

Take a look at <http://hackerspaces.org/wiki/Documentation> and other
pages on the site, particularly
<http://hackerspaces.org/Hacker-Space-Design-Patterns.pdf>.

All the best!
