Shalom METNY!
We are still 2nd in the Israel Challenge! We are so close to the win
so we need to step it up! Answer the trivia questions (below), write
and Ani Zocher Story, sign up for pilgrimage or HeChalutzim, and point
out media biases! If you need any help, feel free to email
me,Rachel.me...@gmail.com, or any of your divisional IAs!
Also, a quick Israel Update!
Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 4, will mark 14 years since the
assassination of Prime Minister Yitzchak Rabin, z”l.
It has recently been announced that an Israeli women, Ada E. Yonath,
will be awarded the Nobel Prize for Chemistry along with two others
for their studies on the structure and function of the ribosome. She
will be the first Israeli woman to win the Nobel Prize and the first
woman to win the Nobel Prize for Chemistry in 45 years!
Omri Caspi became the first Israeli to play in an NBA game last week!
He even scored 15 points for the Sacremento Kings during his first
game!
Lastly, the U.S. Congress backed a resolution today (with 344 votes in
favor of the resolution and 36 opposing it), Tuesday, November 3,
encouraging President Barack Obama’s administration to oppose any
endorsement of the Goldstone Report. The Goldstone Repot is a UN-
commissioned report that accuses both Israel and Hamas of committing
war crimes during Operation Cast Lead. The Goldstone report is
extremely biased against Israel and downplayed many of Hamas’ war
crimes such as its utilizing Palestinian civilians as human shields
and combat use of ambulances, hospitals, and mosques. According to
Congresswoman Nita Lowey, further consideration of the Goldstone
report could seriously harm Middle East peace negotiations.

SHALOM USY!!!
As the Israel Challenge enters into its last month, it is time to put
in that last effort to get everyone in your region or chapter
involved. Creating an Israel Challenge night where USYers in your
chapter gather for the sole purpose of completing challenges and
learning about Israel can boost your regions score tremendously.
Remember, scores are not final till the winner is announced at IC so
no matter what place your region is in, push push push!
When you send in your response, remember not to reply to this e-mail,
but rather to compose a new message toisraelchalle...@usy.org. Also,
the subject of your e-mail should include the word "Trivia" and your
body should include your name and your region (along with your
answers, of course). And remember, all answers must be in
beforeShabbat or they will not be counted.

Hebrew word of the week: Beit Sefer – school. Every weekday we learn
subjects such as math, science, and history at Beit Sefer.
This weeks Israel Challenge highlight is:
Israel Political Cartoon Challenge: USYers will create their own
Israeli political cartoons. 5 different cartoons must be created
during the challenge although 2 may be on the same topic or event. The
cartoons must be originally drawn and written.
This weeks Ani Zocher was written by Louis Sacks (Hagesher):
It was the last week of my trip; the week that my group and I were on
our desert survival experience in the Negev. We drove for four hours
from Tel Aviv to the middle of the Negev desert and got off the bus.
We packed food, four liters of water, and other necessities in our
bags that would be our supply for the next 24 hours. It was only
16:00 (4pm) and the sun was still bright in the sky. Even with my hat
and endless supply of water, I still felt the heat beating against my
skull! We hiked across the desert for the next four hours; up and
down miles of hills and steep cliffs. Even though I could feel
dehydration slowly creeping up on me, I was amazed by the beauty of
the desert. The scenery was so simple but also so complex at the same
time. We finally reached our camp site for the night. After a
delicious meal, I was assigned to dishes duty. The sun was setting
and I knew that I had to keep my eyes away from the setting sun or the
starts in the sky, because if I looked up, I knew that I wouldn't be
able to look away. My back aching, hands pale, I sulked over to our
group for the night time activity. We split up into four groups and
left in different directions from the campsite to get away from the
lights. After we walked far enough, our staff told us that we could
sit, stand, lay anywhere in an area of the trail they showed us. We
could not be within 30 feet of anyone else and had to be completely
silent. I found a nice, large, flat rock to sit on so my pants would
not get dusty and turned my head up to face the sky. My eyes were
overwhelmed with the beauty that appeared before me. A million starts
lit up the desert sky. I could easily see three arms of the Milky Way
Galaxy in the powwow of starts that filled the night sky. Their
luminescent glow hypnotized me. For the next thirty minutes I sat
there, staring at the starts, listening to the life of the desert
around me, flabbergasted at the power, the beauty of Teva (nature.)
Louis Sacks went on Poland Seminar/Israel Pilgrimage 2009 - Group 3.
