Vol. 1 [May 2008] Issue- 5

Editorial

The definition of a healthy person-

Samadosha Samagnischa Samadhathu Mala kriya
Prasanathma indriya mana swastha ythyabhidheeyathe

One who has equilibrium of Dosha (Vatha, Pitha, Kapha) Agni (metabolic activity) Dhathu (tissues) mala (waste products) and pleasant Atma (being,) Indriya (sense organ) and manas (mind) is called a healthy person.

To achieve balance and holistic health, Ayurveda advocates different therapeutic approaches. The following classification summarises the therapeutic approaches offered in Ayurveda.

Mind (Sattva or Manas), body (Sharir) and soul (Atma) are tripod of life. If one is disturbed; the whole life is in turmoil. Manas treatment is a combined approach in Ayurveda. Stress and Memory loss is one of the commonest causes of todays mental diseases. Ayurveda offers a holistic approach towards better health for body as well as mind. There will be oral herbal medication along with oil massage, sirovasti, dhara etc in the therapy. Rejuvenation massage, steam bath etc are other facets of this therapy.

Fully body massage on a daily basis, with sesame oil (or coconut oil) 30 minutes before bathing has several physical as well as psychological advantages. This is effective stress management therapy. A person practicing this regularly will have the benefits of better emotional control and relaxed mind.

People with mental problems are also advised to take vegetarian food, according to their Body type. Spicy, hot tasting and salty food items are not helpful in relaxation, whereas sweet tasting food items are. Easy to digest food items, mostly in liquid or semi solid form ensures faster digestion, which is helpful in wooing off mental worries.

Reading religious texts is another effective way of pacifying the troubled mind. Listening to soothing music with slow beats, hearing natural sounds like singing of birds, ocean and chimes sounds also pacify mind.

Being in the company of pleasant people, visiting religious places and locations, putting legs inside clean water and watching greenery are yet another way of soul searching.

Mind is what a person is in personal life, personality and everything a person experiences in his or her life. To care for the mind, you need special attention.

Herb Of The Issue

Gotu kola

Memory is the ability of an individual to record sensory stimuli, events, information, etc. and to retain them over short or long periods of time and recall the same at a later date when needed.

Poor Memory, lower retention and slow recall and are common problems in today’s stressful and competitive world. Age, stress, emotions are conditions that may led to  memory loss, amnesia, anxiety, high blood pressure, dementia, to more ominous threat  like schizophrenia and Alzheimer’s diseases.

The nature provides a new opportunity to regain one’s full mental capacity. A number of herbs traditionally employed in the Indian System of Medicine “Ayurveda”, have yielded positive results.

It is used as a medicinal herb in Ayurvedic Medicine and Traditional Chinese medicine. It is used as a Tonic, Diuretic and Alterative. It is used in treatment of leprosy and known to ameliorate the symptoms of the disease and improves general health of the patient. It is a brain tonic and stimulates hair growth.

Recent studies confirm some of the traditional uses and also suggest possible new applications for gotu kola, such as lowering high blood pressure, treating venous insufficiency (pooling of blood in the veins, usually in the legs, boosting memory and intelligence, easing anxiety, and speeding wound healing.

Gotukola is a very useful medicinal plant described by Charaka as an anti-aging plant. Apart from its role as a brain tonic, its efficacy in treating tuberculosis, syphilis, amoebic dysentery and common cold is well documented in the literature.

Ayurveda- Role In Mental Ailments

Ayurveda is a science with vast potential. Today there is not a single area untouched by Ayurveda. Actually mental health problems are dramatically increasing world wide. World Health Organization’s warning shows that “depression is set to become the main cause of disability and second leading health problem by 2020”.

Definition of Health as per Ayurveda is given below

Balanced stage of Dosha (Biological Humours-Vata,Pita,Kapha) and proper digestion and balance stage of tissue elements (Dathu) and proper elimination of waste product on the other hand happiness of mind. The person who is having this state totally healthy. (ss.su.15)

Vitiated dosha flow upward direction and accumulate channel in brain (brahma hradaya)and disturbed to function of mind lead to no proper thinking, no proper feeling and action .finally  we can see some sort of abnormalities in their functions, feelings as well as thinking.

To manage them according to Ayurveda concept have to consider about vitiated dosha.and try to bring back that  imbalance dosha to balance state. And  treatment focus to person rather disease.

For this purpose always use internal and external medications. Without writing further more I would like to explain this example then all of you can get some idea about Ayurveda treatment for mental ailments.

Testimonial For Training

“I did the intensive one-week Ayurveda and Yoga training with Dr. Rajesh and to say the least I was extremely impressed with the standard of the course. The course itself was very demanding but as it was well designed it was easier to understand the theoretical concepts as the course progressed. As for the practical component of the course, I had the pleasure to be massaged by 3 different Kerala therapists, who come from 3 different training schools in Kerala, so that I could benefit  from their varied expertise. The best part of the course for me was the practical, as I had the best masseur, Rajeev, working with me massaging different volunteers.  This  was essential to enable me to follow his moves and so  grasp the whole complexity and rhythm of the movements.  The whole course was well supervised by Dr. Rajesh and Dr. Anurag, my Yogi guru during my Yoga training. I’m also very thankful to Dr. Rajesh for arranging hotel, airport transfer, etc.  Overall, this is a fantastic course and I couldn’t have chosen a better centre to do it in.  I highly recommend this course and hope you will have as much fun as I did -  we may even meet on the Diploma course, which will be my next step.”

Kind regards,

Eberth Zagallo

Thanks Eberth Zagallo for the nice compliments about us.
