Subject: Fwd: [AHSBiz] An Answer from IFAS

Hello everyone,

This came up on the AHS Bizlist and I thought was really interesting, so I
am forwarding it to everyone. The link has a lot of good information.
Victor

Over the past several months many C-S Chapter Members thought they had
mealy bug or even pink mealy bug but never saw any mealy bug.  I went to one
of the Extension Agents at IFAS in Palm Beach County with my evidence which
looked exactly like the pictures on this site below for an answer and last
night he announced while doing a Hibiscus nutrition progam for our meeting
that he had found the cause, Boron.  I thought that many of you would enjoy
passing this information along to your members. Paul Felsberg, President,
Conrad-Sunrise Chapter http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/EP362 Boron (B)

Boron deficiency is rather rare in trees and shrubs but has been *observed
regularly in Chinese hibiscus (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis).* Symptoms appear on
the new growth as small, upwardly cupped or puckered, dark green, brittle
leaves with short internodes (Figs. 20-21). It may result in a rosette
effect or even shoot die-back (Fig. 22). Boron deficiency is caused by
leaching on sandy soils, but by drying or high pH on other soil types.
