Need Integrated CSS Editor for Eclipse

Recommendations, anyone?

Google returns a lot of results, but I’d like to hear

what those with experience with the editors have to say.

And I’d like to be able to use an integrated editor,

that allows for color-coding, etc., right within my projects

when I create a CSS page.  (Just making sure I’m saying what

I mean when I say “integrated” editor…)

Aptana sound a little like overkill with all its functionality.
I just want something that plugs into Eclipse and does CSS... only.

Anything like that around?

Aptana got the Ctrl U to work as upload woot woot!

I don't do any of that cool  SVN  stuff yet  so I needed something that worked for ftp.  It does have ok css and html tag support.

If you are looking for something very basic but that doesn't seem to
interfere with anything else, why not pull the WST Project from
Eclipse.org. It provides basic editors for html, xml, css, and
javascript. It pretty much stays out of your face unless you ask for
something. Half the time I don't even realize I'm using it until I
ask for some code insight.

I decided give the WST a try.

I looked, but couldn't tell if it would run on the Eclipse 3.3.1.1 version
I've got installed.

Are you running it on that?

 Excellent!  Yes, it works on 3.3 - I've got a tester 3.4, works there as well.

Now- I'm getting tired, so this may not be clear, but here goes- (taking this thread
for a little turn):

I've done some looking since coming to the conclusion that it would be nice to,
in one fell swoop, take advantage of some of the existing Eclipse functionality
for the CFEclipse main editor portion-

I'm getting a strange feeling about Aptana too- just as far as linking up with them,
nothing against the project, or model (but myeclipse is cheaper, for "more" ;).

So, I'm tossing around the idea of linking up with WST, and/or the Dynamic

I think we could capitalize on, and contribute to, those projects, and do a lot
of people a little more good, so to speak.

I know a lot of effort has gone into the html and css tags, so it's probably
painful to hear that I'd like to tie into WST/WTP for that functionality, in the
future- but that's what I'm leaning towards.

I'd love to have automatic "refactoring" (where when you change a name for
a component or function, it's automagically updated everywhere) for example,
and closer ties to mylyn is nothing but hot butter on your breakfast toast.

Mark, I still haven't had a chance to switch to the branch to verify my
contributions, sorry.  In the mean-time, to totally lose the thread, here's

Pay no attention to the mark occurrences pane- it's the tree, and how the
editor options are now under "editor", I want comments on- no biggie tho.

Anyway, good to be here.  My experience with Eclipse/CFEclipse has

been great so far.

 

I installed the Web Site Tools and right away had no problem selecting

to open my .css file in the “CSS Editor”… (don’t think that choice was

there before and I’m assuming WST brought that capability to the platform).

 

So far, everything is great.  I was even happy to see I could open a “second window”

of CFEclipse, so I can refer to one file while working on another… something I had

to hack the registry in Windows to be able to do for Homesite 5.5.

 

The WST set seems to be aimed at just what I was looking for:  some basic tools

designed for the needs of the web developer.

 

And so far so good!

I'm pleased your experience has been good.  Eclipse is/has a great set of tools.

The Eclipse web stuff is truly outstanding- there's a heck of a lot more to it
than the CSS/XML, etc. editors (although I use them the most, sadly. heh.).

There's load testing, application profiling (memory usage, etc.)- I'm always finding
cool stuff that I didn't even know was there.  A little http proxy request logger
type deal, that's great for ajax and whatnot.

The down side is I need to remember what bits come with what plugins.
Perhaps I'll get to a point where I can blog about some of this stuff (or wiki- it,
'prolly more my style).  That would be nice.  Then I'd remember!

It takes a shift in thinking, and the way you create your applications, (which I'm
still perfecting,) but man- there is some really awe-some stuff available to us!

I honestly can't wait to get some groundwork laid out, so people coming from
the CF perspective can utilize this stuff easier- CF is a perfect language to add
to Eclipse, seeing as it's Java based.  I'm surprised no entrepreneurs have
filled the obvious niche- (Think CFEclipse like MyEclipse- an entire install set
up just to really, really wank with ColdFusion applications).

Wouldn't be hard to have SQL insight, automated test builders, and all manner
of cool stuff...  That's why I /really/ want to get the main editor core code ironed
out-  Imagine a left click > convert to cfscript, or warnings for all un-var'ed variables-
An annotated documentation generator that uses CFCDoc to build nice PDFs or
 whatever...!

A lot of it hinges on the editor class, and the parser, which is why I'd love to go
with something fresh and hip, so to speak- that we can cash in on as other
people add functionality to the base...

Sounds like some good ideas, Dinner!

 

Using CFE is a lot like Homesite, as far as accessing files

and working on them.

 

The only aggravation I’ve found so far is that I haven’t found

a way to easily transfer an updated file from my local development setup

to my VPS.  I’ve just been using Windows Explorer and setting up one

window with the local view and the other window with my VPS view via FTP.

 

I’ve created a connection to my VPS in CFE, but I don’t see a way to

transfer between the two within CFE.

 

Suggestions?

Check out the File managers.  Aptana has a FTP file sync that's
free: http://www.aptana.com/docs/index.php/Synchronizing_your_files
the SFTP version apparently costs money now, and to be honest,
I didn't even install Aptana in my current Eclipse install-  There is an
Eclipse project for AJAX, which does dojo, and that's the main thing
I used Aptana for- really just played with it a few times.

As cliché as it sounds, Aptana kinda seemed to bog down, and sorta
destabilize, my eclipse install- to be fair tho, I was running the nightlies,
so that probably contributed.

Also, ANT is a great, sorta "batch file" like tool for doing sync jobs-

Depends on your sync style, as to how much you'll like any of their
approaches, as they all vary, for, well, various sync styles. :-)

I'm sorta thinking that the TM / Remote System Explorer might be the
sort of tool you're after: http://www.eclipse.org/dsdp/tm/

I'm not 100% sure I'm answering the right question tho-  feel free
to ask for clarification if this wasn't what you were aiming for.

I love the CSS, HTML and JS editors in Aptana, but I'm not crazy about their FTP/SFTP tools.  I really like the JCraft SFTP plugin because it behaves like the other team providers (CVS, etc).  You can get it here: http://www.jcraft.com/eclipse-sftp/
