Hi all, we’re looking to purchase some new pupil laptops in school. If anyone has gone down this road recently, did you use the procurement framework, or did you buy locally? What specs did you go for.

Regards, Damien

Hi Damian,

Used the procurement route twice for Mayo schools over the past four years.

I set out weighted criteria with cost and battery life getting equal weight of a third each and other criteria being a final third.

On both occasions, two years apart, HP won, supplied by Brian in Compupac in Sligo. So may be no harm to go direct.

If you'd like to see the excel template I used please email me off-line.

Regards

Paul

Thanks all for your replies on Laptops. Just as a matter of interest, has anybody gone down the route of Surface RTs as an alternative to laptops? What has been your experience? I’m in two minds about them. I don’t feel I would get them for apps, but are they as robust as laptops that would be going in and out of classrooms every day?

You'd want to speak to the gang at
http://www.claregalwaycollege.com they've deployed the surface this year and so far so good from what I hear.
Don't base your purchase on the 'what apps can I get' :) the standard laptop has only one app that we use everyday and it called office, everything else we get through a browser ..... Well..... Most of the time

Bhuel .... apps are a very important consideration at primary when Internet/broadband not reliable or inadequate but schools still want to progress and provide broad, varied and stimulating opportunities for their kids ... Awful conundrum for primary at the moment and very frustrating.
Just saying...

Hi Damien

Kate in Clontuskert has had a good experience with Surface RT so might be worth talking to her. I, personally, found them a little frustrating and would recommend buying into Surface Pros rather than RTs as you'll get the full laptop experience with them (well almost). We use our RT in school to check in and out library books and that's about it. Having said that, it's used more than the 3 iPads and 6 Android tablets that aren't really used at all. Our refurb laptops are used everyday and cost us less than 150e each.

Do you know what Anne, you're right, I'm an iPad and Apple fan for just that reason, I do a lot of work with primary schools and feel your pain.
I wasn't thinking, what I meant was a purchase shouldn't be made solely on what apps can be bought.

I would be inclined to look at other manufacturers offerings if looking at Windows tablets. Windows RT won't last long but Surface Pro is really expensive if you want full Windows. Toshiba, Asus and Acer do tablets and convertibles at prices lower or in between Surface models.
Only good thing about RT is free office but if that's the only consideration, then maybe look at Libre Office or other free suites.

Hi Damien/Simon,
I have one RT and use it for personal use mostly. I find it very handy for bringing with me on the fly and having access to all of my files on OneDrive or through USB.

In terms of school use the students do use it and they love the weight, touch ability and ease of access. I would agree with Simon that if buying for a class I would go for the Pro so that you would have full laptop capability. The prices should have come down by now.

In terms of apps there has been a huge surge in numbers since last year especially for education. There's a good guide to apps here: http://aka.ms/Apps4Edu

Hope this helps,
