Hi everyone,
I'm a postgraduate student in the Computer Science Department at Maynooth University. I'm working with members of the PACT group which some of you may be familiar with from CESI conferences and other events. My research is looking at introducing secondary school students to Computer Science and Computational Thinking.

To that end we've designed a course which is aimed at Transition Year students but could really be used at any level. Modules currently include "unplugged" lessons on topics like Algorithms and Cryptography, Scratch and Python with more being added all the time!

So far feedback from students and teachers has been really positive, but we're looking for more teachers/schools who would be interested in running all or parts of the course in their classes.

If you'd be interested or know anyone who might be interested please email me at james.l...@mu.ie and I can give you access to the material and explain how it all works!

Thanks,
James

Hi James,

I work directly with schools, first to fourth year and also train teachers, if you wish I can review and give you some feedback. I did a study on the primary sector a while back http://kidscoderclub.ie/irish-study

I was actually just going to ask a question related to this topic.

I was wondering how many schools are teaching students how to code (not Scratch)?  If you are, what program(s) are you using? What age group?

Teaching 1st - 4th year coding at the moment, hoping for CS with 5th year next year if we get into the trial.

In rough order: Scratch, Python, Git, HTML/CSS, Javascript, SQL.

We currently use Raspberry Pi's for robotics, we use IDLE and nano/emacs for python on the Raspberry Pis, Thonny for python on windows PCs, pythonista to code python on the iPad, Github for git, Working copy/Octocat for iPad Git, for the the web stuff we use GitPages for projects and we use KhanAcademy's Computer Science to learn HTML/CSS/Javascript and SQL, notepad++ is nice too.

I'm sure we'll change it up but that's how it turned out for our Junior Cycle students.

-Danny

Hi Amy,
Have a look at codeucate.org    On there is a 38 lesson browser-based syllabus for school children aged 9 to 15/16 that teaches the fundamentals of JavaScript; Junior JavaScript which deploys on a platform that allows teacher to monitor progress with an accompanying pupil-tracking system to check progress on an ongoing basis.
You might like it.

Hi James
I was at your colleague Keith Quills microbit course last Saturday and someone there was recommending your TY computer science course.

Would it be possible to access the materials?

To clarify I currently teach HTML and CSS with Whizzkids to Ardscoil Rís TY (a double once a week) and feel they could learn a lot more.

Best wishes

Hi James, I teach level 5 Computer Science and would be interested in accessing your course to see if some of your material could be adapted to this level. I teach python, java, and dabble in a bit of microbit etc.
