I wonder if there are any users of Incomedia Website X5 on here.  I had a class website created with Website X5 but the PC that had the original files crashed (literally crashed down on a tile floor) and the hard drive is so corrupt that the cost of recovery is prohibitive (and did I have this drive backed-up - of course not)

I have the website on line intact but is there any way to download and recreate it on laptop so that it can be updated.

Thanks.

Nicky

Hi Nicky

You could try one of the following

http://pagenest.com/buy.html costs EUR29.95

http://www.httrack.com/ is free

WinHTTrack is the Windows 2000/XP/Vista/Seven release of HTTrack, and
WebHTTrack the Linux/Unix/BSD release.

Thanks Val but I don't think that will help.  I don't know Website x5 well enough.  I can download all the files but x5 will not read them as they need to be in a project file as I understand it.  Someone who uses x5 may have better knowledge than I have.

Hi Nicky,

The project file type is .iwp and/or .iwzip.

On occasion, I have taken the hard disk out and placed it inside a ‘hard disk caddy’. Attach this to another PC in order to, hopefully, recover the file.

Must dash now and make a backup of my own drive!

Kind regards,

David

That's definitely worth a try, just because a hard drive fails to boot, does not necessarily mean that all files are lost.

Thanks David and Willie but I have done all the usual myself. put it in another computer as second drive, tried it in caddy, ran Stellar Pheonix Pro  and then took the drive to the experts.  They tried rescue software without success and suggested a figure to try the next process .  I'd need to be the winner of the euro millions.  There was nothing of value on the disc except the website files so spending money to rescue it wouldn't make sense.

Thanks

Nicky

Hi there, I don't know if this helps but surely if you uploaded the files for your website that means they can be downloaded again?? (as a project)
I'd contact the hosting company and see what they suggest, after all when you migrate from one hosting company to another & They do the migration for you they don't use the files from your local computer, well in most cases.
I hope that points you in the right direction. I'd be curious to know how you get on.

No from what I know of Website X5 that can't happen. The files on the website are .html. Website X5 does not have an import facility for this file type.
Some of the options open you would be:
Start again with website X5, set up the structure and copy and paste, even with a backup you would probably have to reconfigure the pics anyway.
If your hosting package facilitates wordpress then install wordpress files  from wordpress.org (can be done in 5 minutes they say, but not really that trivial, as they say). Wordpress has a plugin that will facilitate the importing of html files.  Your advantage here would be you now have a web 2.0 site and you can update from anywhere on any device with internet access.
Lot of work initially but easier to maintain and easy to backup.

Set up a new site with weebly.com  or wordpress.com, these do not have the facility to import HTML files however but are very easy to set up and maintain.

All this is a long way from recovering files (and my usual turn it off and turn it back on again thanks JH for the shout out on that one) but hopefully it may help.

Willie

Hi Nicky,

Sounds like you have done all of the steps – and more – to try and recover the Project file. I suggest you have no option but to start again, either with WebX5 or with Willie’s suggestions. At least you have the online content from which to Copy and Paste into whichever editor you opt for. There is no easy solution here – you might just have to take that one on the chin …and it’s a timely and salutary lesson for the rest of us (well, me anyway!) who don’t do those regular backups L

Thanks David for your consoling words.  I am a persistent and fastidious backer-upper on my own laptop.  I take the simple route.  I have Google Drive installed and it is constantly backing up everything that is important.  Free and easy - that-s my motto.

Nicky

Rushing now to start recreating!!

+1 on using Google Drive for simple backups alongside the other stuff you can use Google Drive for as part of the Google Apps for Education service

I imagine the same thing can be done just as easily with Microsoft One Drive or Dropbox too.

I've been encouraging this among teachers in my school, particularly those who would find any other means of backing up files a bit challenging. I just get them to treat Google Drive as their "My Documents" folder and save everything there so that stuff is constantly backed up on the fly with no intervention by the user.

John,

Since we use Windows machines, I have placed My Documents in Google Drive so that everything automatically saves to the clouds (that does not take into account those who persist in saving to the Desktop (even google isn't that good).

What about NAS for backup, it's not as user friendly and GAFE but it can complement it nicely .

IMHO

People could use:

Dropbox Pro (as this has ‘versioning’ so you can see various versions of files), it’s $100 per year but worth it

Additionally backup your whole Dropbox folder (or your NAS drive) using Amazon Glacier (http://aws.amazon.com/glacier/ which is really inexpensive)

Having it in the ‘cloud’ is not a proper backup ;)

If you have to do something manually in your process, it’s not a proper backup ;)

If you have not tested that you can ‘restore’ successfully, it’s not a proper backup ;)

It all depends on what balance of convenience/cost Vs Backup you choose J

Kindest Regards,

Seaghan.

For teachers, in a managed network, their My Documents should be backed up automatically for them (redirected profiles and Windows Server backup). I do encourage teachers to use Google Drive as a replacement for USB drives and you've just made me realise it falls outside the scope of the automatic backup! I keep a USB caddy handy for when teachers' home computers break.

Personally, I use BackBlaze, which is ~€5/month and has unlimited storage, and have a USB drive that I plug in as much as I can.

And this is related... Backblaze publish stats on their HDD failure rates:

with a good discussion here:

The conclusion being Hitachi drives are the most reliable and enterprise drives aren't worth the premium.

Personally, I used BackBlaze for a few months, but during a test, found I was unable to download a backup (this may have been my inadequacy at the time). I now use CrashPlan and am able to browse and download earlier versions of backups/files etc. So, I suppose mileage will vary…

HTH

Kindest Regards,

Seaghan.
