Hi all,

Are you interested in developing your project-based learning practice in the classroom, or looking at promotion and want to enhance your leadership management skills? Maybe you want to find new ways to teach digital skills to your students, whether you simply want to learn new ways of incorporating digital technology into any subject across the curriculum, or perhaps you are teaching or thinking of teaching Junior Cert Coding or Leaving Cert Computer Science in the future.

If any of these points have piqued your interest, we’d like to recommend reading on to find out more about the Postgraduate Certificate in 21st Century Teaching and Learning at Trinity College Dublin. Or, perhaps you might know of a colleague or friend who might be interested (Please share this with them).

You must choose and complete 6 modules from the following in order to graduate with this Level 9 Certificate:
  1. Digital Media Literacy (Compulsory Module)
  2. Problem Solving in the 21st Century (Computational Thinking)
  3. Contextual Mathematics (Project Maths and the Bridge21 Model)
  4. STEM Pedagogy
  5. Information Literacy
  6. Introduction to Programming through Animation (Scratch 1)
  7. Intermediate Programming through Game Design (Scratch 2)
  8. Text-based Programming (Python Introduction)
  9. Exploring Computer Systems (Raspberry Pi, Arduino and Micro:bit Introduction)
  10. Leadership and Change Management in Education
  11. Inclusive Education
  12. Teacher as Co-Researcher
There's just under one month left to apply for this course and it's excellent value at under €400 for a level 9 Certificate (30 ECTS), whose credits can count towards a M.Ed. in Trinity (e.g. the first year of the 3 year programme).

We are now accepting applications for the 2020/21 academic year, with an extended closing date of 28th September, 2020. The course is primarily aimed at post-primary teachers, but we have had educators teaching in upper primary, further education or informal learning who have gotten a lot out of the course. We have also heard from graduates and alumni of the programme that the knowledge and skills they developed as part of their involvement on the programme really helped them adapt their teaching practices to the changing and challenge circumstances we all find ourselves in this year.

Please note: In line with current safety protocols during the Covid-19 pandemic, all modules for this course will be delivered remotely, via an online platform, in the first semester (October - December). Students will not be required to attend in person during this time. We hope that the situation will subsequently change and allow us to host students on campus in the second semester (January - March), but this will depend on government and college advice.

Here is a link to our brochure, which describes the structure of the Cert, plus all of the different modules on offer.

More information and the application link can be found at this web page. Please feel free to share this information with any interested colleagues. If you have any questions about the Cert course or the applications process, please send your queries to the course administrator (pgcert21admin AT tcd.ie). In addition to those official sources of information there are quite a number of CESI list members who have done the course and I'm sure they'd be happy to share their experiences!

Hi all,

Just an update in relation to the Postgraduate Certificate in 21st Century Teaching & Learning at Trinity College Dublin. See the CESI list thread/previous email for more information.

Applications are still open for the next academic year (2021/22) and close on the 31st May 2021.

It really is great value at under €400 for a level 9 Certificate (30 ECTS) and we have great feedback on how engaging on the course has positively impacted teachers practice in the classroom:

"Participating in the Postgraduate Certificate has helped our school introduce and embrace 21st century skills in our classrooms. We have developed a team of teachers and students that are engaged in project-based learning in the Arts, Sciences and Technology using the Bridge21 model of teaching and learning. Personally, I am enjoying a more facilitatory, creative role in my classroom, and my students have become more active learners."  Deirdre Brennan - Firhouse Educate Together Secondary School (PG Cert 2016-17)

"As a Science teacher the course has made me think differently about my approach to methods of investigation and in particular inquiry based learning. The practical nature of the assignments has given me more confidence to allow students to solve problems on their own and take more control of their learning." Stephen Burns - Drimnagh Castle Secondary School (PG Cert 2018/19)

Hi Jake,
I hope you are keeping safe and well.

In  2019 I completed this course but would like to enroll again and take different modules.
I am hoping to introduce LCCS into my school and found the Teaching and Learning in the 21st Century an excellent program.

My health was an issue that last time but I have fully recovered and would really appreciate the opportunity
to complete other modules of this course.

Thank you.

Kind regards,
Miryam

I fully online version would be great - it would really open the course up to people outside of Dublin.

I agree, I fully considered it but travelling to Dublin to attend is just too much of a stretch for me.

Hi All,

I have completed the application for the Postgraduate Certificate except for the supporting documents section.

Would anyone be able to guide me as to how to proceed to the application payment in advance of tomorrow's deadline?  I understand that the supporting documents are not required until the end of June.

Thanks and regards

Paul

I’d guess if you uploaded a document saying that the official documents will be forwarded in due course? The system just needs ‘something’ to show that step is complete and will not be checking the accuracy of the uploaded document.

Best of luck,
Natalie

Thank Natalie, we replied to Paul privately.

@Conor and @Karen, we are exploring this for future years based on our experience of running the programme online over the last year. We will definitely post here if those changes come into effect, but we can't guarantee those changes for the coming year at this stage.

Kind regards,

Jake
