Hi everyone,

I'm currently doing a thesis based on teachers' perspectives on the use of tablets for children with ASD. I plan to send a survey to all ASD units in Ireland. However, I'm concerned that the response rate may be poor, as I'm unsure if ASD units actually have tablets available to them. Just wondering if anyone could advise me on this.

Thank you in advance,

Sinéad

Hi Sinéad,

I work in CPC kilcullen, no tablets available to our kids in the ASD unit, just basic PC's

Good luck with the research.

Hi Sinéad

Our ASD unit doesn't have tablets for the class' specific use. There are a number of laptops instead. We'd need a lot more justification for them at this point. So far, I can only see them as worth the investment as a communication tool (via PECS or something similar). In this case, we have to make a decision on whether velcro and laminated sheets are a better solution. I'm sure there are other reasons that tablets beat other devices in ASD classes, specifically but haven't found anything to completely convince me yet.

Simon and Sinead,

I had a very interesting conversation with one of the SNAs working in our ASD unit during the week. He was strongly of the opinion that the kids need more money/time spent on SPHE type courses/resources than tablets etc, food for thought...

Hi Sinead, we're opening an ASD unit in September and I've been lucky enough to visit several units this week (thanks Simon among others!). I've seen tablets used effectively as a motivator or reward tool in one unit where the children using it didn't have the motor control to use a mouse. Every where else was using laptops or pcs and as far as we're concerned the jury is still out.

A teacher in our school got two ipads (sanctioned by SENO) for two children a few weeks ago.

Thank you all for your responses. It has most definitely given me food for thought....maybe too much! Paula, that is really interesting and perhaps something that I need to explore in the study. I guess that the responses are indicating that tablets are not being used widely in units and I am worried that I will not gain enough feedback to analyse! However, it was suggested by someone else on the blog to perhaps explore the reasons why schools are not using them, as this may produce valuable information also....like Simon's reasons for not having them. All thoughts welcome?! Also, Andreas just wondering does your school have an ASD unit? Thanks again everyone!
