All,
Look to use the power of CESI. Can anybody provide myself and one of my
colleagues with some training on Google sites. Do it I can arrange web based
training facilities if you want to do it remotely or you are more than
welcome to come to DCU to do a face to face session. All necessary equipment
will be provided. We are both fairly techie people so I promise we will pick
it up quick. Payment can be provided if necessary or payment in lieu is also
an option i.e. I'd be willing to help you in return if I can. Ideally the
training would happen early June
Thanks in advance

Hi Mark
I am no expert with Google sites but I did use it to develop a website for
my local GAA club. The GAA signed up to use Google sites for all GAA clubs
and provided a template. I used it and found it very straight forward to
use. They did provide some help using some support sites. My local parish
is looking to setup a new website and have found some of the places that
provide parish websites and hosting to be very expensive, I have suggested
they use Google Sites and I have got them setup with a Google Apps for
business using the parish domain name, and have a domain name email address
at a cost of about €100 per year. I have said that I would setup a website
using Google Sites as I had done the GAA one but I have not got it done
yet. I do find it limited enough with what you can do but I suppose it is
free from Gmail account users. I have seen some very impressive Google
Sites and I would love to get to know more features. My knowledge is basic
enough but would be happy to show you what you know if you like.
I would also like to get my hands on the document that Anne referred to.

Peter

It absolutely kills me to see Scratch being referenced as a critical
component to classroom ICT education. Scratch was designed to target kids
ages 5 - 8. It has a place but it is more often used as a crutch for the
adults who do not have the training or resources to offer a better
alternative. The logic skills taught in Scratch can be easily taught using
an number of other software choices and it is the wrong tool for
introducing basic logic concepts. Scratch proposes to be what is called an
Integrated Development Environment. It does a reasonably good job at
getting started but it has two critical faults. First, it is to broad as
explained by Zed A. Shaw in this Vid <https://vimeo.com/53062800>. Second
and more dangerous it is impossible to transition off the platform. Just
like locking yourself inside the Apple selection of hardware. Complicated
scratch projects do not offer a good way to scale beyond doing small
animated greeting card projects. Most reasonably intelligent kids can find
a platform limitation within 20 minutes. Choosing Scratch for children over
the age of 11 is sacrificing the ability to grow for some up-front
convince. It breaks my heart to ask university kids if they have any
'coding' experience. As soon as they hit their first programming course,
they realize they've wasted 100s of hours dragging scratch blocks around.
And, please do not retort with a comment that only computer science kids
need coding skills. Every single job in the world today requires some form
of *textual* logic needing to be entered into a computer. Whether your
talking about ruining Ireland's economy because of an Excel macro,
performing an advanced search query, or simply navigating around the
Internet, you need to be able to understand the tool that we've all
willingly slaved ourselves with: the computer.

In the Scratch Team's live webcast about Scratch 2.0 a few weeks ago, I *
think* they said that Android tablets that some use Flash will run the new
version but it's no optimised.
They are planning a standalone offline version of Scratch 2.0 so it is
possible that this will also see an Android optimised version too. I don't
think that has been officially announced, so it may not happen.
Alternatively, check out Snap (a HTML5 version of BYOB) that is very
similar to Scratch (but a bit harder and more powerful). It might work
better on tablets?

I agree with the sentiments expressed in this post. Please forgive me if I
share some thoughts on this. The study of logic, I believe should not be
,limited to one or a number of systems. To my understanding, The
exploration of thought in a logical manner can develop the new perspectives
that are the foundations of new developments.
Forming minds need nourishing. No more than the use of a computer comes
easy to children, systems built on simple logic will quickly be absorbed by
them.
When dealing with children learning Scratch, it is important to be aware of
the moment when their understanding goes beyond that system and be ready
with another step for them. An interested mind can find the creation and
study of fractals a challenge.
If we confine our childrens' study of logic to occupation on an existing
computer system, we could find that their ability to explore and be curious
will be curtailed. The greatest book of all is nature itself, with all her
undiscovered mysteries.

Depending on the Android hardware, you can possibly self-install Flash (via
an .apk file) on the Android from the Archived Flash Player Versions page on
the Adobe website. To do so, please visit

I would add the advice that, when installed, you may want to uncheck the
"Unknown sources" option once again to keep your phone or tablet secure.

Hi all,
I've recently made the move to MAC and haven't looked back since. I'd
appreciate if anyone has any advice or suggestions of useful software or

that they might share them. I know there are plenty mac aficionados out

Hi Humphrey,
I'm not currently a Mac user but over at https://deals.cultofmac.com/ they sometimes have goodoffers on hardware and software that may be of use, including some freebies. They're not focussed on education obviously but you might pick up something useful from time to time. It's worth keeping an eye on anyway.

resolution than iPad 'retina', 32Gb internal storage plus SD slot - When it
becomes available in Ireland (a friend got one from the UK today for €279 I
think) it might become useful in schools because of its premium e-reader
pedigree.

Are there any primary schools out there who have managed to install a reliable wirelss network? With increasing deployment of mobile devices, this is probably an issue that a lot of schools have run into or will in the future. We have a set of netbooks that we have trouble with when trying to connect wirelessly (coverage drops throughout the school) and we're exploring the idea of using tablets. However, we would ideally like to have a more robust wireless solution in place first. Is this possible for primary schools, or are we limited by our narrow bandwith?
Bryan Lynch <bryanly...@gmail.com> May 15 12:24PM +0100
Hi Nigel
We spent some money last year upgrading all necessary equipment, best thing
we ever did. Everything is now wireless including printer connections. It
also supports mobile devives that kids bring in. The one thing worth
checking is the licences per day per device. I'm not explaining this very
well but basically some routers will only support less than 100 devices per
day, after that you cannot connect to them. We spent bit extra and got
routers that go way beyond what we need.
Call if you want to know any more.
Hope this helps.

Cheers Brian, must give you a call at some stage.
I'm reading a lot about various solutions, Ruckus seems to be very good,
but I'm worried that our bandwith just isn't enough to support minimum 18
classrooms with laptops, computer room with 18 desktops, a number of SET
rooms with desktops, 30 netbooks connecting wirelessly and, more than
likely, a set of tablets to come.

*Hi, This may interest some ** Language Teachers. It's seminar on using new
technologies for language teaching on in May 23rd in Dublin see below for
more details. *
*Language on the Go* (LANGO) is an EU funded project bringing together 6
partner organisations (in Bulgaria, Cyprus, Ireland and Malta) to explore
opportunities offered by new technologies to encourage learners to maintain
and build upon their exisiting language skills. The project consortium has
developed a multilingual language tool of interactive learning approaches
and innovative e-learning platforms to provide mobile assisted language
learning within a framework of attractive and easy learning content.
The tool integrates technology and uses innovative applications which do
not require advanced computer skills on the part of the learner. This
allows for more individualized and independent learning in terms of pace,
time and place (home, work, on the move). The LANGO product offers users:
- introduction and practice of frequently used language patterns
- initial development of communicative skills
- easy language input through real life communicative situations
- entertaining learning activities to practice language patterns
- expanding intercultural awareness through language learning
Project details are available at: http://www.lango.eu
The LANGO project will be presented at a seminar on Thursday morning, 23
May in the *Church of Ireland College of Education*, Rathmines, Dublin 6.
Registration opens at 09:30.
There will be inteactive demonstrations of the technology employed as well
as presentations on innovative language learning and intercultural
encounter. Light refreshments will be served. There is no cost.
