Hi everyone I need your professional advice on managing student records. I am looking for suitable e-portal software that our school could use to take registration, record student reports etc. Something that every teacher could access from their classroom or even at home. If anyone has any experience at using such software i would appreciate the advice as we are currently looking to update and improve our current system.

Many Thanks
Liam

Hi Liam,

Have you tried www.engrade.com? It ticks all the boxes for me.

Ok engrade looks great but can many users log on with the same log on details. In other words lets say we as a school open one account input all the class information for every year. Will every teacher be-able to simultaneously open that account whereever they are to input info.

Hi Liam,

Oh a whole school solution! No I don't think so. I thought you meant individual teachers having somewhere to store their class grades and attendance.

For whole school solutions see http://richtech.ca/openadmin/index.html which can cater for a school on a single computer or http://www.schooltool.org/ which has a much nice user interface.

Thanks Fergal

I watched the demo and this is exactly the type of application that
I've been looking for.

Dear Liam

I did alot of research on this (with colleagues last year) for the school I worked in (which was overseas).
We looked at
Engage - by doublefirst (which Fergal already flagged)
SIMS
Facilty/Secro
ISAMS

In the end we went with Engage because of its integration with the Accounts system, the promise that they will develop integration with Moodle and their support in our country (among other reasons) .But beware, this is not cheap software and the learning curve and training implications are not to be sniffed at. I missed all of that but reports from my colleague are that its been a fairly demanding implementation - though I have no doubt that it would have been the same regardless of the software. If you have a decent budget my experience is that any of those guys will be very accommodating in providing demos etc. We had a group of people working on it.

If the budget is not so healthy - you might be interested in looking at open source solutions
In July the Opensource schools site posted about a new free MIS called Scholar Pack
there are 2 more mentioned in this fab site called FreeMis and SchoolTool - both of which you can find reviwed in the opensource site. I have not used them myself.......

I do hope all of this helps.

Clare

At lot of Irish schools (ours included) are using facility eportal.
That will allow multiple teachers to take a reg over a web based
interface.

We use ePortal and Serco Facility in our school and the cost of using it is huge. I would love to go back and think free!!!!!!!
Better to look at the freeware options if you're looking to start from scratch and are, as most schools are, bereft of any decent admin budget!
