CoderDojo help!

Hi all

I'm on the verge of getting a CoderDojo set up in Carlow. I have a list of people and a venue but I don't know what the next step is to get going. Is there anyone here who can help me out?

We (Cavan Town) set up a website page linked from the zencoderdojo site (contact them at sta...@CoderDojo.com), and organised the registration using Eventbrite. We were fully subscribed with a wait list within a couple of days. Starting with first group next Sat afternoon.

Thanks Mags. I've contacted sta...@coderdojo.com a couple of times over the last month or so with no joy. I believe I need to organise people into roles and things like that but I don't really know how to go about this next stage. I think I need someone to hold my hand through this stage (maybe I could check out another local Dojo?)

Ah, we are limping thru this stage also, but have enough mentors to get by on day One, alas I will miss that. Then we re- group and go at it again!

Pam has been mentoring in Tipp for a few weeks now....might be the person to let us all know!

Here in Dublin, Noel King has recently started a new Dojo at DCU, having previously been mentoring at the Science Gallery Dojo.  Liam Friel is on the verge of going live with a Dojo in Bray, having previously been mentoring at the UCD coder dojo.  Both excellent people to talk with about starting up.  I've included their e-mails as cc.

There is some content on the wiki at  http://kata.coderdojo.com front page about starting up, written by James Whelton a long time ago.          

Eventbrite is the way to go in terms of booking - at least that is what all the Dublin Dojos are using.  It is very easy for the contact person to be overloaded with questions/e-mails from parents - which take a lot of time.

Claire, I've added you to our mailing list. The Dojo will be taking place in Carlow ETNS. Was hoping to start in June but think it's best to go for a September start at this stage.

Hi all

Thank you to everyone both on and off list for your responses. I feel I'm now at a point where I have the people but need to know what to do on the very first day. I think once everyone knows what the gist of how things work are on the first day, then the rest should follow.

I recently contacted Maynooth College where they have a dojo (very large, great resources) up and running.  They didn't mind me getting in touch and going along for a look.  They were willing to answer any questions I had and would probably do the same for you.

My advice would be to go along to a local Dojo if possible and you can
have a look at what they are doing and have a chat to those involved.
The Thurles one is on this Thursday from 4 - 5.45 pm if you can make
it at some stage.

I'm involved in a couple of Dojos at this stage so if I can be of any
help let me know.

Hi Simon, 

I have been involved in the original CD in Cork. The structure is as follows-

Set up the classroom:

With enough tables, chairs, as many desktops as you can muster, and powerpoints.

Projector/ screen.

For html material, a lot of what we use is w3schools.com

Each week, an exercise of some kind is carried out, such as setting up a particular kind of web page which is written out by participants according to the sample displayed on screen and then run on the participants' own browsers- A particular image/ set of images can be downloaded for the purposes of the exercise or participants can try their own material. Often participants like to set up their own website which is cool.

I think the trick is to explain what is happening in each section of the html code and to ask participants to take each piece by piece so that they can absorb how the code is working.

If someone has a cool piece of tech/ video/ etc. that they want to show off, it is nice to break up the session now and again for a little bit of diversion. Let the kids have a go at presenting if possible.

For anyone who is thinking of setting up a CoderDojo in their area, I just want to publicly acknowledge that the support I've received from people all over the country has been amazing. A huge thank you to you all. I feel so much more prepared than I did a few days ago and the time people have taken to send fantastic detail about the set up has greatly aided me.
