All,

Look to use the power of CESI. Can anybody provide myself and one of my colleagues with some training on Google sites. Do it I can arrange web based training facilities if you want to do it remotely or you are more than welcome to come to DCU to do a face to face session. All necessary equipment will be provided. We are both fairly techie people so I promise we will pick it up quick. Payment can be provided if necessary or payment in lieu is also an option i.e. I’d be willing to help you in return if I can. Ideally the training would happen early June

Thanks in advance

Mark

Hi Mark,

Steven from Camara has previously mentioned that they provide training on Google apps which I presume includes Google Sites?

Hi Mark

I am no expert with Google sites but I did use it to develop a website for my local GAA club.  The GAA signed up to use Google sites for all GAA clubs and provided a template.  I used it and found it very straight forward to use.  They did provide some help using some support sites.  My local parish is looking to setup a new website and have found some of the places that provide parish websites and hosting to be very expensive, I have suggested they use Google Sites and I have got them setup with a Google Apps for business using the parish domain name, and have a domain name email address at a cost of about €100 per year.  I have said that I would setup a website using Google Sites as I had done the GAA one but I have not got it done yet.  I do find it limited enough with what you can do but I suppose it is free from Gmail account users.  I have seen some very impressive Google Sites and I would love to get to know more features.  My knowledge is basic enough but would be happy to show you what you know if you like.

I would also like to get my hands on the document that Anne referred to.

Regards

Peter

P.S

I am a long time reader of the cesi-list and enjoy some of the topics and this is my first post.  I am not a teacher but work in the IT Industry and have a great interest in ICT for Education and would love to get involved in this someway.

Hi Mark can't help directly but my experience of helping adult learners who wanted to do simple websites has been that they found Google Sites unintuitive but Weebly fine... that's about a year ago, upgrades to both products may have changed the lie of the land.

I think it's rumoured they may scrap Blogger. Unfortunately.

I've been looking at getting a easy to manage website running for team authoring and I'm finding that Google's http://www.blogger.com/ has the same/more/better features for creating a website. More importantly it appears that Google is continuing to add features and integration with Google Plus. Google Sites doesn't appear to be getting the same attention.

If they scrap Blogger what will happen to all the Blogger sites? Will they have to be migrated to a new platform?

what tends to happen with the likes of this is they will give users plenty of notice then they offer you a suggestions, what I think is going to happen is they will push people to google sites IF they move at all on the flip side of things, I don't think anything is going to happen but I was wrong about google reader.
To answer your question YES your sites will have to be pushed to a new Eco system.

I doubt that blogger will get scrapped in that it is an adwords platform. It earns money and as mentioned earlier, there has been a raft of new features incorporated within the last year.

Well basically you will be able to export your content as an xml file which you should be able to import into a new blog platform such as wordpress etc.
