July: Neocolonialism

 

Our focus in July is on colonialism, its history and its present impact on the shape of the world.


Monday, July 21, 2008, at 7:00 pm: Video: "A Force More Powerful" (Episode 1, 87 min) looks at the Nashville Student Movement of the 1960s, Gandhi and independence for India in the 1930s, and the end of apartheid in South Africa in 1985.

Monday, July 28, 2008, at 7:00 pm: Video: "A Force More Powerful" (Episode 2, 87 min) looks at Danish resistance to the Nazis in 1940, Poland's Solidarity movement in 1980, and the toppling of Pinochet in Chile in the 1980s.


August: Nuclear Weapons

 

The anniversaries of the nuclear bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki occur early this month,

and set our education agenda as well. We have speakers planned who will talk

about America's past and present production and use of nuclear weapons,

as well as nuclear weapons proliferation around the globe.

September: The Candidates Speak

 

As we do every Presidential election year, we'll invite candidates from local to national races

to participate in a panel. Last time we had local organizers for each campaign,

and had a lively discussion that was really excellent. We're also exploring 

he experience of being a delegate to a national party convention.

October: Multi-Cultural Appreciation

 

We're hoping to have speakers this month who'll talk about how to get past "culture clash,"

help us understand aspects of other cultures that are foreign to those of us who are native born,

and build up to our UN Peace Essay Contest by exploring a model UN.

While we're focusing on the work of the SOA in Central and South America,

we'll also look at immigration issues from South to North,

the lives of the people in these countries,

and the effects on the people who live in countries

whose leaders are antagonistic to our current administration.

Monday, March 17, 2008, at 7:00 pm: Panel: Iranian-American Pirouz Shoar and Persian Poetry Scholar Dick Davis gave fascinating presentations about Iran's culture, sociology, and current affairs. Afkham Davis brought Iranian treats for us to share, in recognition of Iranian Independence Day (March 21).
