either / or ( male or female check boxes)

This is probably a fairly common problem.
I have a section in this document named Gender.
I put two check boxes...male/female.
When I put the document in pdf and click on these check boxes, I
cannot deselect them.

How do I get the check boxes to be editable or deselectable?

You should use Radio buttons instead of check boxes. By assigning a same name to radio buttons, you can make them mutual exclusive.
