*****  message from Color of Change

Dear friends,

The Senate is closing in on a health care bill with a public health insurance option, a key ingredient of meaningful health care reform.

But conservatives and insurance companies are fighting hard against the public option, so Senate leadership has compromised by including an "opt-out" clause, which would allow individual states to choose not to participate in the program.[1]

There's a real danger here. In the stimulus fight, we saw Republican governors and legislators refuse federal dollars for political gain. The same thing could happen with health care reform, with everday people in states like Lousiana, Alabama, and South Carolina -- states with large Black, poor, and working-class populations -- left out.[2]

That's why I've joined ColorOfChange.org's campaign calling on Congress and the White House to make the public option available everywhere. Please join me:

I understand the need for compromise and negotiation, but I also want to make sure that no community gets negotiated away in the process.

Including "opt-out" may be the best way to get a bill through the Senate with a public option--but that won't be the end of the process, and it doesn't mean "opt-out" will be in the final bill. The House still needs to decide exactly what will be in its health care bill. And once both the House and the Senate have passed legislation, they'll have to negotiate with each other, and the White House, to reconcile the differences between the two bills.

That's why we need to make it clear that we're watching and that we will demand a public option that's available in every state. Please join me in sending this message to Congress and the White House, and ask your friends and family to do the same:

Thank you.

I apologize for the recent post to GIO supporting the public option and make this final response to a detractor assuming that it gets to GIO! -

There is a pattern out there, a pattern which allows one to respond to certain stimuli in certain ways. In this way people can understand you. They understand your behavior. One such way perhaps would be a corporate style in which you go around wearing an American flag on your lapel, if you have a lapel on your suit.

If you ain't got no suit you can still wear the thing anyway. Either tattoo it on your naked chest or stick it on your chest with a pin.

Either way you may become blind and believe that you are free and that you chose to stick the pin into your lapel by way of freedom.

But the point is that you didn't. You thought this was the proper way to respond when actually it shifts the expression of all your humanity in one fatal direction. And you and all your friends begin to accept that one fatal direction as law.

Such like it is law that we have homeless people. It is law that we overcharge people for mortgages and lock them out of their houses because it is cheaper to foreclose them (have u ever been at a police station watching the homeless families waiting for the homeless van to come and pick them up to take them to the cruel distribution point?). It is law that BROADBAND in illinois is rarely the 5.1 megabits per second (mbps) as is averaged on speedmatter.org. It is law that people with money will have medical care and others can wait all day and die at Cook County because they ain't got no card. It is lapel pin stick in it your chest law.

Well, I am shocked with the law we have all these abandoned houses, all these abandon crazed teenagers and no program to teach them how to use a hammer to remake those houses while learning a trade and getting their high school G.E.D. and getting that homeless family a house because the unions and the banks said no.

I believe it was Herodotus who said it, putting it in the mouth of a certain Demaratos, a fugitive Spartan king, who was characterizing the Greeks losing a war: The Greeks, 'although free, are not free in everything: they have a master, namely the law, which they fear even more than your subjects fear you'.

I would say, in proper English. 'If you stick a pin in your chest, no matter how small and ineffectual the thing is, it could hurt.'

I want make no mo' pattern breakin comments here on da thing or I apologize and will not do it again yall.

Larry
