As you may have heard we've been working on a replacement for Pootle
named Herder. We've finished most of the basic features (actually
performing the translations, accepting suggestions, etc) and working on
preparing for a beta/testing period. Herder will be give us several
advantages, including:
* laying the foundation for live preview of translations on the staging site
* full version control so we can see who changed what, when, and roll
back in the event of problems
* the ability to see all the untranslated strings for a language on one
screen
* notify translators via email or through feeds when things change.
We wanted to get some feedback from the community on the email feature
in particular. We think this will be a good way for translators to keep
up to date on translations. For example when we add a new string or
update the English text to reflect new usage, translators could opt-in
to receive an email notification. When someone translates something or
suggests a new translation, translators could also opt-in to receive
notification of that.
Questions for you, the community and translators:
* do you want to receive notices via email?
* what sort of notices do you want to receive? when people update
translations? when we add strings? [note: we're going to make this
opt-in, we're just trying to figure out what "levels" we should provide]
And finally, are there any features that would make a translation system
more useful to you and easier to use? Feel free to reply to me directly
or on the list.
