Hi Everyone,

If you aren't aware, yesterday Group ownership changed. As you know Ethan Banks created the group two years ago and for more than 1 year I was the Group Manager. Ethan is busy with his other projects and cannot follow the group anymore thus He left the group ownership to me.

If you don't know me yet, I am a CCIE and CCDE , CCDE Trainer , blogger and podcaster. I write my articles for 4 months on my own blog http://orhanergun.net but published many podcasts and articles on well known networking blog/podcast site http://packetpushers.net

If you didn't visit yet http://orhanergun.net , I strongly advice since there are many network design, CCDE related topic out there as well. Also be a membership of the group since I organise free webinars to talk about network design and architecture and invite other industry experts such as Russ White , Elaine Lopes and so on.

Hope I can help you more and since the manager position is empty now , If you are interested send me a PM or email to orha...@hotmail.com

Last but not least If you didn't encounter my CCDE Training offering before, there will be a new class in July and you can check the detail from here.

Good to see someone else taking over... It's been kindof quiet around here for a while...

Yes it was , I don't know how we can change it though. I will start to share my articles , I think you should do too , people should share their CCDE success stories ,ask their questions. Any other idea ?

Cheers,
Orhan

Hello,

Being an active participant of something as impersonal as a mailing list is something that I've always found difficult. For awhile, I've wanted to be part of a like minded community of networking nerds but putting yourself out there is a scary thing. No one wants to appear dumb to those they respect. What I like about this list is people tend to be supportive and friendly. Unfortunately, that's not always the case.

I'm not sure how you solve the problem entirely, but I know it starts with participation. So, I intend to do that.

With that in mind....

I'm Jacob. I live in Las Vegas and recently went through the pain of renewing my CCIE. I've started my CCDE journey with reading ORD.

If no one wants the manager post, I will help. Or I will do my best to add what I can.

Peace,

Jacob

Hi Jacob,

It is definitely participation, thus I will be doing what I wrote below. Also I hope people ask their questions, participant with their comments to the questions and so on. No one can know everything ! So if you have network design, CCDE related any questions guys , don;t be shy , post the question , otherwise when you finish the already existing ones it will not be beneficial to anyone.

Cheers,
Orhan

Hi Orhan,

My first question reading this was, what exactly is the group manager?

I would think that it should be a purely administrative position (as a moderator, keeping things civil and allowing people into the group).

It shouldn't come with the responsibility of creating content I think, as that's too much to put on the shoulders of only one person. By content I don't mean only publishing blog posts, but even starting a discussion on a blueprint topic or proposing a scenario (especially if it's based on real life experience, as we can all read the same books/CVD/easily accessible resources).
Some of us are always better at triggering discussions, while others are better at giving good/stimulating answers. We also have a mix of CCDEs, of people actively studying and of others passively studying (just lurking). I think those actively studying are in the best position to kick off discussions as they will have the motivation to get the most out of what they're doing.

The fact that you're trying to push the group to be more active is great and I hope I can start contributing soon (notes, discussions and blog posts) as I'm moving from lurking to active study.

Cheers,
Cris

Hi Cristian,

It is mostly administration. We have already 500 members who can and should create the content , start the discussions. As i have seen there will be a lot of discussions , for example Russ and Marwan is writing their books and I can say that good resources are coming. New design videos, articles will be published by me. And we are waiting here to answer the questions of the CCDE candidates. (Technical and official Cisco folks such as Elaine Lopes with us)

Cheers,
Orhan

This list been quiet -- hard for me to drive conversations, as at this point I'm not able to devote significant time to certifications of any kind, let alone something as arduous as CCDE. I might have started the list a couple of years ago, but this is a road I haven't walked down very far.

A couple of comments from me so list members know where I'm at and why I'm moving aside (not that I think anyone cares too much, but why not at least toss it out there...)

(1) A lot of my interest in CCDE was driven by a network architect position I accepted at a startup company to build out a national data exchange network. This network would plumb some private regional networks together, as well as leverage a large existing network infrastructure. CCDE covers a number of technologies I hadn't used in production that I would be using to build this environment. Thus, CCDE seemed like the perfect plan of attack. I could ramp up on certain network tech from a design perspective, which really appealed (and still appeals) to me. Unfortunately, the company that had hired me was "all hat and no cowboy." The venture never materialized, although it still might at some point in the future. I opted to left the venture a few months ago.

(2) I am working for myself these days as the co-owner of Packet Pushers along with Greg Ferro. We are proceeding ahead with that business, which is occupying an extraordinary amount of time. While I'm quite happy to have this particular problem, I have rarely worked more hours in a week than I've been working lately. Pushing the business ahead is quite a challenge -- one that leaves no time open for serious study, at least not right now. I'm also doing a bit of consulting, seeking out opportunities in emerging technology areas like SD-WAN.

Orhan has been active in this group, has contributed to the CCDE program, and has fostered knowledge sharing in the community. He'd been acting as the manager to handle group approvals and anything else that needed to be addressed. Thus, it made perfect sense to me for Orhan to become the owner, a role he graciously accepted. This allows me to step aside entirely and focus on those things that are uppermost in my mind right now.

My thanks again to Orhan, and all of the other contributors here. My very best wishes for success to all of you going down the CCDE road.

/Ethan

Hi Orphan,

With  the video posted on on your site - restricting hosts reaching the server,  just wondering whether we could implement private vlans as an alternative solution?
