We are in the midst of March 15 pink slips, and one of our faculty members who is the only person on our campus teaching earth science got one.  In effect, this action completely eliminates that discipline.  This is a first for us, but I seem to recall a senate rule of some sort that prohibits this without senate approval.  Can anyone give me additional information on what responsibility the administration has to the senate when taking this kind of action?  Thanks in advance.

George,

Could you clarify a little more of the situation?  Is the subject discipline being eliminated or moth-balled or is an adjunct going to be hired to teach one course in the discipline a term?

Because this is a RIF, the district cannot back fill with adjuncts.  The program will continue on our sister campus (our teacher has bumping rights there,) but due to the 39-month rule, our admin cannot hire anyone to teach any of those courses on our campus unless the job is offered to the bumped faculty member (I hope this analysis is correct--it is what I have been told.)  As a result, yes, it appears that this is not a temporary move, at least not for 3 years.  I was under the impression that Title 5 did not permit the elimination of a field of study without senate input, but I can't find the chapter and verse.  Thanks.
