On Thursday, August 14, 2008, the case, The Commonwealth vs. Copi, was
tried in Henrico County General District Court of the Commonwealth of
Virginia. Keith Copi of Critter Control was charged for illegally
killing three feral cats trapped on the WRLH Fox Richmond property.
Keith Copi, the operator of a Critter Control franchise, was found
guilty under a Virginia law that prohibits the “cruel or unnecessary”
killing of any cat. At the trial, Mr. Copi admitted trapping and
killing the cats, who had been cared for by employees of the
television station for years. Mr. Copi was found guilty of three
counts of misdemeanor animal cruelty. For each cat he killed, he was
sentenced to a 12-month suspended jail sentence and a $250 fine. His
license was also revoked.
Alley Cat Rescue applauds the Henrico County Commonwealth's attorney
for upholding the law when it comes to animal welfare. We feel that as
more and more animal cruelty cases are brought to trial and animal
laws are upheld, the closer we come to a society that believes animals
have rights and such cruelty against them will not be tolerated. Thank
you to our members who attended the trial in support of our feral
friends!
