(1890 Christmas Card)
2009 was a great historical year for Carrick and Overbrook. Our finest achievement was the Pennsylvania Historical and Museum Commission approval of our application for a Roadside Marker for John M. Phillips. The dedication was held on October 31, 2009 at St. Pius X Church, 2336 Brownsville Road. Our dedication was reported in the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette (

here. The event was also a chance for the descendants of John M. and Harriet Duff Phillips to visit and meet our community, many for the first time and for our Overbrook and Carrick communities to join together. St. Pius was
also gracious enough to open their hall, provide pastry treats and refreshments for our dedication ceremony on a rainy and blistery Halloween Day.
We have acquired a new 1912 map of Carrick Borough with addition plans of lots. This map very large and will be scanned and downsized for framing and viewing. This is only one of the many documents donated to our society.
We also are thrilled that our Carrick Engine Company has proudly adopted the Carrick-on-Suir, Ireland town symbol on their fire truck as well as when Carrick became a Borough - 1904. Check it out next time you see it ride past or go and visit Engine Company No. 23 on Brownsville Road at W. Cherryhill Avenue. This symbol is also on the rock on our Carrick Mural. Carrick (Carraig) means rock and the Irish town is known for the many swans on the River Suir, hence the rock and the swan. You can go to Carrick-on-Suir virtually, on line, by

What's being planned by our society for next year? In addition to any suggestions from residents:
In the summer of 2009 we started an appeal for stained glass photos for a "Windows of Carrick" photo poster of our magnificent treasures we take for granted. We had a great response from the community including several requests from proud residents of the Borough of Mt. Oliver and our neighbors in Overbrook who live on the fringes of our neighborhood borders wanting to be on our poster. This project was put on hold until January, 2010 so that we could focus our attention on the successful marker fundraising, installation and dedication. Starting in January we will continue photographing the windows for our poster. If you haven't submitted yours, or want us to photograph them, please email John Rudiak
jrudiak@yahoo..com. All photos will be on the poster without location known only to the
owners. Once we have compiled enough photos a poster will be made, printed and offered for sale at minimal cost as a keepsake.
In 2010 we will also compile a minimum of 12 historic photos of Overbrook-Carrick history for the first annual calendar starting with 2011 to be offered for sale to the public at minimal cost. Which photos will we include from our web site and others we find will be a mystery until the calendar is published. You can also see many at the Carrick Library where they have been expertly framed by Julia Tomasic, or on our web site
www.carrick-overbrook.org.
We are organizing all the files in our Carrick Library. We are always looking for volunteers to help scan, cut, paste and organize. Contact us for details.
Here's wishing you a better year than last in health, prosperity and happiness!
Historically and Sincerely yours,
The Carrick-Overbrook Historical Society
