Dear community members,
As Vice President of the Carrick Community Council, I wanted to send a few updates on behalf of our Board of Directors
. This past weekend was a very big one for the community of Carrick. We thank you for your support. We have worked very hard to put community events together, and they couldn't be a success without
your participation.
Here are some of the great things happening in our neighborhood!
- Our Halloween costume contest had over 60 little participants, as well as a special appearance by our local Boy Scouts. The annual Halloween parade had over a dozen floats, including two marching bands, local political officials, children's groups, fire companies, and local businesses. Despite the rain, we marched with our heads held high and we even got some great media from KDKA. Click on the video to see some cute kids, the pride of Carrick! - We had a wonderful marker dedication ceremony for the John M. Phillips marker on the 2300 block of Brownsville Road. Included in the celebration were 100 attendees: over 25 descendants of John M. Phillips
along with elected officials PA Sens. Ferlo and Costa, PA Rep.
Readshaw, Pittsburgh Councilman Kraus and Councilwoman elect Natalia
Rudiak, State Game Commission representative Joe Stefko, Carrick
Overbrook Historical Society founders Carol Anthony, Julia Tomasic,
Natalia Rudiak and John Rudiak, BSA Robert Stein Learning for Life
Director along with Dwayne E. Hiers Scoutmaster Troup 614, originally
Troop 1, Silver Tip Division, John M. Phillips'
original BSA troop.
St. Pius X Byzantine Catholic Church opened their church and
we had the ceremony in the church hall. All those mentioned above gave
short presentations commenting on how this marker affected them or
their recollections of John M. Phillips. Although the family did not make any comments at the dedication they thanked all those
involved with this project. Look for the historical marker in front of St. Pius X Catholic Church!
- Mr. Robert Baltos has extended the computer class offered through
the Education Committee of Carrick Community Council at Pittsburgh
Carrick High School to the already established participants due to
their enthusiastic interest. Mr. Baltos is seriously considering
offering another computer class in the Spring. If you, friends, or family are interested in attending on of these computer learning classes, please contact CCC Board member and PCHS Carrick teacher, Miss Cindy Falls at excus...@yahoo.com
- On October 31, at Pittsburgh Carrick High School, a ceremony was
held inducting Alumni into the Sports Hall of Fame. Alumni from
Classes of the 30's - 2000's were present and spoke of their memorable
days at Carrick High School and living in the Community. This ceremony
was dedicated to Sgt. Ryan Lane, Class of 2002, that was killed in
Afghanistan in July. In attendance were his wife Valerie (Muller)
Lane, Class of 2002, parents of Sgt. Lane, and many family members and
friends. State Representative Harry Readshaw presented Valerie with a State proclamation and Miss Cindy Falls, (teacher to Valerie in Health Technology) with the folded American flag. Miss Falls also read a poem to the parents and presented each with a picture of Sgt. Lane that was beautifully framed by Julia Tomasic, another CCC Board Member. A final salute was given to Sgt. Lane and Mr. Lane ended the ceremony by speaking about their son. Thank you Sgt. Ryan Lane and all the heroes of the Carrick community.
We hope that we can continue to count on your support of our efforts. Please continue to check out website,

Warm regards,
Carrick Community Council
