Hi Again.
I've had a few discussions off line and I am now surprised by the people
who would read posts on a forum called "carfree" and say - "oh, but I'm not
anti-car, there are just too many of them and people don't follow the law."
To say that one is not "anti-car" is to condone the car system or to
agree with it.
The automobile system of transportation was set up by people who made their
system profitable by destroying the previous systems. Nearly every city in
North America had streetcars. This act was perpetrated on our cultures at
the beginning of the 20th century. The old system of street cars was destroyed
systematically to create their market. As car systems promised to make big
money for private interests anti trust *convictions* were recorded but the
laws and punishments of the day were not enough to stop the process.
The system of streetcars may have needed modernizing but cars was not
what we wanted at the time. People of all classes used this system and it
worked very well. It was not particularly polluting, dangerous, or
restrictive.
I assume "anti-car" to mean "against car systems in an urban setting."
If you are an environmentalist but not "anti-car" please explain why.
Thanks,
Robert.
