Have you tried editing your ~/.emacs file to include at the end:
(find-file filename.ext)?

I am using Carbon Emacs 22.3 on Mac so that I can print using the Mac print
dialog. I would also like to have Emacs load a particular file on startup.
Another source tells me this can be done by setting the
initial-buffer-choice variable. I can do this in Gnu Emacs 23.1.50.1, which
I have running on an Ubuntu server, but this variable doesn't seem to exist

You can always do this by using
open -n
(n for new instance)

Carbon Emacs maintainer got his PC stolen in the states

Seiji got his PC stolen while checking emails at an open cafe in
Maryland. This would suck if it happened to any of us. While I hope
that the dirtbag who stole the PC gets caught and the goods returned
safely, I wouldn't mind kicking off a collection drive/pledge to get
him a new one (if it is his personal PC).

I believe the Carbon API has gone away in Lion so Carbon Emacs is a non-starter. Try one of the NextStep (Cocoa) versions.

I am receviing repeated crashes on startup. It shows emacs window, but
crashes if I click the mouse anywhwere inside. The workaround I found
is to go to File menu and open a file using it.
Here is crash dump:
