May 7th, 2009 - Frederick Armstrong Shaul
San Francisco, California

My father passed away in his sleep and was found on the Mariposa (his 42' person sailboat) in Marathon Key, Florida, some time on May 6th.  He was a tremendous friend and father to me.  I will miss him dearly.

May 8th, 2009 - Remains cremated in Florida.


May 18th, 2009 - John's daughter Pam and her husband traveled to Florida.  The Mariposa engine started fine and it was moved from a bouy to a boat slip.  Most of John's personal belongings have been recovered.  Interested parties should contact Pam or Frederick.

May 22, 2009  11 AM at the First Unitarian Church in South Bend, Indiana.
  • In lieu of flowers, the family has established the John Shaul Memorial Fund at the Michigan Maritime Museum which will be benefit the Museum and the historic tall ship, Friends Good Will. Donations may be sent to the Michigan Maritime Museum, 260 Dyckman Road, South Haven, MI 49090.
May 23, 2009  6 PM group of sailing friends and family in South Haven, Michigan, sailed onto lake to remember.

June 5, 2009  Boarsdance community will be holding a wake for John at 6:30 at 810 Botham Ave., St. Joseph, Michigan.

Kevin - friend, spoke to him Saturday before he passed away?

Jim - marine surveyor friend, knew John's boat well

Captain John Duke - old friend of family who first exposed us to sailing in the Florida Keys and who is still active with his Dream Catcher.  He has asked to help look after the Mariposa.
