Hey folks! The next CapSec is scheduled for April 25th.
Throwing this out there early to see if we want to keep on with Fado, or if we want to try another venue.
The reason we are at Fado is that post being on U Street, lots of folk were bitching that it wasn't more centrally located.
Now that we are centrally located, it's REALLY FREAKING CROWDED around traditional "happy hour" time -- 5-7 PM -- go figure!
Most times when we are at Fado, it does clear out around 7:30-8 or so.
I think we are going to have this problem pretty much anywhere which is right next to chinatown, honestly. RFD has been suggested as an alternate -- they are bigger, and usually have some space -- but in my personal opinion, the food isn't as good and they staff are often dicks there, whereas Fado they are much cooler. And, in true Brickskellar tradition, they are always out of something . . .
I'll leave this thread open for a week or so for debate, then I'll make a call. If no one speaks up, we're at Fado again.
For those of us coming in on the red line, something in the Chinatown area is definitely more convenient than going up to U Street. I also prefer Fado over RFD for the same reasons. With that said, it doesn't really matter that much to me. If there is somewhere that we can go that is less crowded then I don't mind the extra time to get there.

I keep hearing that upstairs at The Hamilton there is always room during Happy Hour. That being said, I haven't been there yet, but have heard good things:

I don't imagine Helix runs out of space early in the hour of happy on a weekday, and I've enjoyed my times there...and during the summer I think they have an open area out back. Walkable from Dupont circle?

I don't really care if we stay or move. However, I prefer some place along the red line (and fado's food is pretty good). On Apr 11, 2012 9:02 AM, "Jack Whitsitt" <sintix...@gmail.com> wrote:

I've been really unimpressed the few times that I've been to Bier Baron. Plus, they seem to have a really hard time dealing with "ad hoc" groups -- i.e. you can't show up and say "we'll have a bunch of people" -- it's more structured like a restaurant where you have to get "table for X."
Much as many people liked the Brick, I think it just needs to be a fuzzy happy memory. If we're going to try somewhere that far away from "city center" I want to try something new.

Someone at the last CapSec also mentioned Helix (or I think it was Helix).
I think the thing to do is do a poll on what method people are using to get to CapSec. The problem with Dupont and other Red Line locations is that it screws the people coming in from VA. However, if no one is really using Blue or Orange, it opens up Dupont as a possibility.
I'll try to throw out some sort of poll soon, or people could just sound off here.

Doug --
I use Metro to get to CapSec. Unless you decide to go off the grid
and meet in Old Town Alexandria -- then I will drive(i.e. I come from
VA). Thus, I am voting for anything Metro-friendly. I have also
observed how busy Fado's is to begin with in the evenings. Most of
the time we "outlast" the other civilians, though. Meanwhile, I will
follow you guys like a lemming as long as the venue is Metro-
friendly. A bonus is good food. I personally thought Fados was
pretty good for pub fare, but the Hamilton and Helix ideas seem
interesting as well. /end sound off

Well, that's the crux of the matter -- we want to keep it
1. Walking distance from a metro (people have different definitions of walking distance) 2. Accessible to all who want to come (i.e. no dress code, no specific requirements, no high price tag) 3. Accessible to as many different locations around DC as possible (i.e. centrally located for metro).
The one set of people who do get screwed are those who drive -- but that's going to happen almost anywhere in a city during rush hour. Only way to solve that would be to go way out in the burbs, and that's not what we do.

Agreed. I love being able to Metro down and back, but then I live in the city. I'm less likely to join if it is somewhere in the burbs.
Fado isn't a bad choice and it's definitely convenient from the Metro. Even the orange/blue line people can walk a short distance to Metro Center, as Kathy (sp?) and I proved last time. It just gets crowded at happy hour time.

Well, this list could be added to. I just figured I'd put out what we have, as it could eventually get silly, too -- only so much one can do on a school night.
Though thinking of some of the CapSecs that migrated down to DC9 back in the day . . . (Jack, if you don't at least put in an appearance, I will be sad. And someone make Fish & Mike Smith drive in from the burbs!)

Yeah, the hardcore crew can migrate more at the end of the regularly scheduled events.
Now I'm craving those giant mozzarella sticks from DC9...<sarcasm>Thanks Doug</sarcasm> LOL!
I hope to see a good size crew out there!

Stand by for upcoming post on this.

Doug -- I use Metro to get to CapSec. Unless you decide to go off the grid and meet in Old Town Alexandria -- then I will drive(i.e. I come from VA). Thus, I am voting for anything Metro-friendly. I have also observed how busy Fado's is to begin with in the evenings. Most of the time we "outlast" the other civilians, though. Meanwhile, I will follow you guys like a lemming as long as the venue is Metro- friendly. A bonus is good food. I personally thought Fados was pretty good for pub fare, but the Hamilton and Helix ideas seem interesting as well. /end sound off

Yeah, the hardcore crew can migrate more at the end of the regularly scheduled events.
Now I'm craving those giant mozzarella sticks from DC9...<sarcasm>Thanks Doug</sarcasm> LOL!
I hope to see a good size crew out there!

/end sound off

so, are we still at fado next week? other than the chinese place (and not even that too much), i wasn't impressed enough to want to move? there wasn't any places i can remember that weren't crowded as hell or noisy as hell (one place was but idk that it was as close to a metro or convenient as fado).
but, hell, i enjoyed the bar hop so much, another exploratory meet would be cool (keep taking suggestions and exploring a week before capsec each month?) - i'm sorta joking as far as this thread goes but sorta serious - it was fun and i'll do it again.

Well, aside from my somewhat biased opinion about Japone, which of course I like, I also rather liked Laughing Man Tavern. While Japone is generally quite, with happy hour prices till 8:30, and certainly has the space and would be willing to make accommodations for us, it's menu is quite particular being a Japanese restaurant and it's beer selection limited. As for Laughing Man Tavern, it had a similar feel to Stetson's with good happy hour deals and happy hour that lasts until 8pm. As for food, it had a nice variety of what appeared to be slightly better(and perhaps slightly more $$) standard bar/tavern fare, except the happy hour appetizers were all $5 which was a nice deal.
So those would probably be my first 2 choices, but I would be also up for another bar hopping adventure to try out more places. A couple of the places we visited this last time were certainly far too loud or crowded to accommodate our crew.
