HI all,

I am planning an event to observe the transit at Cerrillos Hills State
Park. The program will begin at 3PM and go until sundown. Please let me
know if you can join me. I will need as many folks as possible for this
super rare event.

I can do this event. As it happens, my CPC 925 came with a solar filter, which I haven't yet used. I presume you'll want me to bring it.

OK transit fans. I have prepped a press release mentioning our club. It is pending approval by the brass at NM State Parks. I have materials including glasses coming from my contacts at NASA. Our own Tony Begg has agreed to share about  Guillame Le Gentil's frustrated attempts to observe the 1761& 1769 events. Would another club member be willing to present the story of the USNO photographic expedition?

I plan to start the program at 3pm on 6/5. Our usual Stargazing spot at Cerrillos Hills State Park will allow for easy public access and unobstructed viewing until about 6:15-6:30pm.

More soon.

Hi Peter:

I have an old astronomy buddy from Atlanta that will be in town for the transit. He's pretty avid and I imagine he will want to go somewhere where he can observe past the 6:15 to 6:30 you mention for Cerillos. Any suggestions of any other gatherings around town with better horizons?

Thanks,

Bob?

Dear Bob

Peter originally planned on a site within Cerrillos Hills State Park that has a clear horizon until sun-down, but it is a bit of a hike with equipment.  He plans to start the event in the usual star party place, but he plans moving to the other site later.  Then those of us with the stamina can enjoy the whole transit.  He thought this way he could accommodate more people.  We could set up some scopes at both sites and then it would be easy to move between the two.  He looked closely at better (road) access to the other site within the Park but it can’t be done.

Best Wishes

Tony

I have to balance public access with my personal preference. As a ranger with NM State Parks I serve the community.

People did hike a bit to reach my site at. Bluewater Lake State Park for the annular eclipse, but it was pretty short and a discrete moment in time compared to the distance required for Cerrillos and the hours that we can observe the transit.

So a public event at a state park causes me to accept some limitations.

Otherwise, I would host the event at the Mirador overlook in Cerrillos Hills State Park.

Clear skies,

The roof deck of the lab building at St. John’s is available. I will be setting up the usual ragtag bunch of instruments starting at 3 or so. All welcome! I can’t promise the party atmosphere we had at the solar eclipse, but we’ll have a bunch of students, faculty, families, and friends up there.

I think the planetarium is doing something, too.

As for Cerrillos Hills, despite my personal preferences I have to balance public access and our resources. NM State Parks serve the community. So, that is why I am using the regular spot near the main entrance.

The transit is a bit different from the perspective of public event planning. It is ongoing for hours and not a discrete period of time like the annular eclipse. So I am going for a location that people can find and access easily. Some will take a quick look and leave after a bit. Others can hang out. So there is something for most everybody.

A clear view to sundown can be had for those willing to hike out a mile+  to the Mirador overlook. I will probably head on up there myself after I go off duty.

Clear skies,

By the way, I have a copy of the book by Eli Maor “June 8, 2004, Venus in Transit”.

I’ll be happy to lend it to serious afficionados, who will be disembowled if they do not return it.

I’ll be at the Cerillos gathering and I will bring my device to project the sun on a piece of paper (I forgot the name of it, it’s a nice plywood contraption in the shape of a triangle with mirrors and a lens).

Cheers,

François-Marie

I'll be there too.  Did a bit of rsch on the Web. [Let me know if I didn't get this right. <g>]

Transit starts around 4p here in SFe/NMx. But max is about 7:30p. Sun is almost set then, ~ 10-deg above horizon (10-deg in the sky is about the size of your fist at arm's length).

Sun/Venus actually sets around 8p.

Guess I'll get to St. John's about 6p.

Clouds? Dunno.

Hello!
I have about 12 VHS tapes and the "Tapes of the Night Sky" (small cassettes) free to
good home.
I'll throw them away by this week-end if there is no taker.

Has anyone see the auroras linked to the sun spots?

HI F-M,

I am familiar with the "Tapes of the Night Sky" but what are the 12 VHS
tapes, content, etc.?

Ulysses reported seeing a green color through the clouds while at the
opera on Friday night. I went out on Sunday/Monday and photographed the
northern sky---nothing evident in my frames.

I haven't seen any other info about aurora visible from around here.

This is stuff I taped from PBS in the 1980s (I think): Venus, Space Program, Mars,
Are We Alone, Deep Space, Time Travel, Only One Earth etc.

Hello world... I am the internet.

Sorry to say it (mostly because I have fond memories of capturing NOVA and other programs [finger anxiously on the REC/PAUSE button to edit out interruptions with precision for more enjoyable viewing at a later date]) but those days are over. Most of the world's media is either already on or being uploaded as we speak to venues such as the following.

Hard to throw them away though F-M, isn't it?

Hello everyone!

I am selling my Meade LX90 (http://meade.com/lx90) .

At $600, it is a steal.

I comes with the Meade 26mm eyepiece and the enhanced diagonal. I even have the original box.

I comes with the original straight through finder, not the right angle finder visible on the photo.

Also to grab: binocular holder, $20 (the blue thing, not the tripod below).

Cheers,

I'm potentially interested. Does it come with the tripod?  Everything good and no issues? I'm guessing that this is old gear.  For me, it would replace an 8" dobs.
