Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce

2007 Survey Results Report

The Economic Development Committee of the Canyon Lake Chamber of
Commerce procured advice from the Texas Economic Development Council
and PEC to see how to kick-start development programs for the
committee. The committee developed a community survey for the purpose
of gauging opinions on what types of businesses we do not have and to
develop a program of work.

The survey was conducted from mid February through March 31, 2007.
2,000 surveys were printed and distributed by committee members and
chamber staff to churches, restaurants, supermarkets, banks and
retailers. Less than 200 surveys were completed and submitted.
Articles in the Canyon Lake Times Guardian, on the Chamber's website
and membership e-mails gave information on the survey.
The survey posed only five questions with space for personal
comments. Questions included were:

What kind of businesses do you think we need to attract to the Canyon
Lake Area?

Choices were: Medical Clinics/Pharmacies, Supermarkets, Restaurants/
Retail, Hotels/Lodging, Automatic Car Wash, Apartments/Condominiums,
and Indoor Entertainment/Recreation.

The majority of the participants chose all of the above, with almost
all including additional comments on the need for this business
community to attract a large supermarket and whole foods style
supermarkets, franchise fast food restaurants, hospital or a doctor's
plaza with emergency services, pharmacies, quality dining venues, auto
parts stores, movie theatres, bowling and more entertainment for kids.

Would you do business with them and shop locally?

Approximately 90% said yes and those who didn't commented they would
if the prices remained competitive.

What would be the best location for these businesses?

The majority suggested a centralized place for all Canyon Lake
residents to reach. Most suggested Hwy 306 and close to Sattler and
Startzville.

Although the Chamber neither supports nor is against incorporation of
any community, we also wanted to gauge the interest of residents who
would like to attend an informational meeting and to give them an
opportunity to ask questions to a qualified professional concerning
incorporation.

Would you attend/participate in an information meeting on "The Pros &
Cons of Incorporating?"

One of every four surveys filled showed interest in attending such a
meeting.

What day of the week and time of day can you attend?

Most chose weekday evenings.

Additional comments included the need for medical facilities that are
centralized for Canyon Lake, an HEB, more fast foods like chicken or
pizza places, activities for teenagers. Several mentions of how
residents would like to see local retail and restaurants stay open
later. Some mentioned that we should keep the area as it is, having
moved here because of how it is.

The Chamber Board is working to prioritize what is important to our
citizens and members and the Economic Development Committee is putting
together a three subcommittee model to work on Business Development,
Business Attraction and Tourism Attraction. Detailed information will
be available for serious prospective businesses through our Executive
Director Jaynellen Ladd at the Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce
office.

The Canyon Lake Chamber of Commerce Board and Economic Development
Committee would like to thank all the survey participants for their
expressions and time contribution.

More community surveys are planned by the Chamber in the near future
that will have a more extensive distribution and collection process.

The Chamber's July Business After-Hours Mixer July's Mixer contributes
to the Serve & Protect Program and this year's recipients are the
Constables from Districts 1 & 4, Shane Rapp & Ben Scroggin. Their
need is for at least one defibrillator at an estimated cost each of
$2,000. If we are able to provide two, they will place one in each
patrol car. These two fine gentlemen patrol Canyon Lake and the
Guadalupe River areas for our community. Each year Cathy Wingert of
Wingert Insurance Agency challenges all other insurance companies to
meet or exceed her contribution, so watch for upcoming details about
that! Last year the Sheriff's Office & Officers received over $4,900
from the Serve & Protect Program that purchased digital cameras for
each patrol car, eliminating the sharing of a few cameras among them
all. That contribution was greatly appreciated! Please keep this
program in mind as July approaches.

The Chamber has a MASCOT! And, there's something's fishy about all
this! Did you see it yet? KEEP YOUR EYES OUT! Did you call yet?

some extra fun!

May 9, 2007: Official word regarding Guadalupe River flow below Canyon
Lake Dam is as quoted below:

GBRA and the CORP have been trying to get the flow turned back over to
the Hydro Electric plant so that local utilities can once again
generate more affordable electricity for our area as they have not
been able to for several weeks.

The turn over will take place this afternoon and the flow should be
800 CFS tonight. The flow will stay at 800 CFS for four to five days
unless weather conditions change.

May 8, 2007 Support Plea

Dear Citizens,

Habitat for Safe Seniors needs your help! We have progressed
enormously since our inception in 2004. With the progression of our
organization, our needs have also increased for funding. Thus far, we
have been approved for the Combined Federal Campaign List; we will
also be receiving a small grant from an organization out of Houston
Texas and our new Senior Center is set up and running. Activities for
the Senior Center are in the planning stages and will include but not
be limited to having seniors bingo, pot luck lunches, senior games,
and others as planned.

While we are waiting on this small grant we need your support in
normal operations of our programs. Currently the three programs on
going are the Home Repair Program, Yard/Environmental Cleanup Program,
our Food Delivery Program, and now our new Senior Center with its
activities including a food pantry. Our annual budget is estimated at
$65,000 and we have pledges of less than 33%. Currently we have over
25 backlogged repairs to be completed and make approximately 106 food
deliveries weekly to senior citizens in the Canyon Lake area.

If you can help, please make a donation to Habitat for Safe Seniors.
We will continue our service to our senior citizens every possible
manner. I thank you in advance for your support!

Sincerely,

Rondah A. Savage, Executive Director

Art Roberts, Sr. Vice President - Chapter & Chamber Relations of the
Texas Association of Business delivered a warning about a 'map scam'
occurring in several areas across the country. You may receive a call
indicating that the seller is representing your chamber for an ad in a
map that is to be published by them. They may mention your ad
'renewing' or ask for credit card information. Business names being
used, to name a few, are MTS Maps, Premier Map Co., Quad City Map Team
and ADS Enterprises. If you would like to read the email we received
in full, please email to ad...@canyonlakechamber.com and Bonnie will
forward it to you. On this note, the Canyon Lake Chamber's official
map is the Canyon Lake, Guadalupe River, Comal County Area Map
published by Texas Trails Map & Visitor Guide out of Llano, Texas who
may be contact at 325-247-5183 to advertise or purchase. Discovery
Maps and DFW Marketing are members of the Chamber who sell maps and
the advertising that goes on them. DFW has a map going into
production in the very near future. The Better Business Bureau offers
some guidelines:

First and foremost, if you ever receive a cold call from anyone
stating that they "represent" an affiliate or vendor or program or
organization you may be familiar with, and it involves PAYMENT, that
you check first on the company that is calling PRIOR to divulging any
payment or personal/business information.
Businesses should ask that all advertising propositions be made in
writing. Ask for a list of satisfied clients, contact them for
feedback, and ask to review copies of their advertisements. See if the
business selling the advertisements has a report with the BBB. For
national companies, go to: www.bbb.org <http://www.bbb.org/>
Finally, if you feel you have been deceived or misled by an offer, be
pro-active and file formal complaints with the BBB as well as your
state Attorney General's Office for resolve. (Best method of payment
for anything over $50 is credit card. That way, you can dispute the
charge if there is any misrepresentation or lack of follow up on
service or product.
If you have fallen victim of this company's misrepresentation and have
paid $549 to join their directory or guide, and the transaction was
made via phone, you have the right to the FTC's THREE DAY COOLING OFF
PERIOD RULE, which states that you have three days from the time of
purchase or agreement to rescind your transaction. The company, by
federal law, must comply with this rule.
